Fangorn Forest was a deep, dark woodland that grew beneath the southern Misty Mountains, under the eastern flanks of that range. It gained notoriety as the habitat of the Ents in the Third Age. The forest, known as Entwood in Rohan, was named after the oldest Ent, Fangorn.
History
Fangorn forest was the easternmost survivor of the immense forest that spanned all of Eriador and Calenardhon in the First Age and early Second Age, but which was destroyed by the Númenóreans and Sauron. Fangorn forest was the oldest part of Treebeard's realm, and here the Ents retreated.

Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took passed this forest in late February, early March T.A. 3019. There they met Treebeard and persuaded him of the danger that Saruman poses to the Ents and their forest. Following the Entmoot the rest of the Ents finally agree to march against Isengard taking Merry and Pippin with them and send Huorns to Helm's Deep to deal with the Orcs there. Part of the reason is that Saruman's Orcs had been chopping down the trees at the south and west side of the forest, which had angered the Ents.

On March 1, T.A. 3019, Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas entered the forest in search of Merry and Pippin. Rather than the two young hobbits, they encountered the White Wizard. At first they believed it to be Saruman before realising that it was Gandalf, returned from death.
Arvegil (T.A. 1553 - 1743, died aged 190) was the eleventh king of Arthedain, succeeding his father, Argeleb II, upon his death in 1670.
History
During his father's reign, Arvegil saw events that would shape the history of Middle-earth, including the foundation of the Shire. He was eighty-three years old (no great age for one of the Dúnedain) when the Great Plague came out of the south and ravaged Eriador, but the seat of the Kings at Fornost in the north was little affected.

Arvegil lived for one hundred and ninety years, longer than any of his descendants until Aragorn, as is noted in the Appendices to The Lord of the Rings. By the standards of his own ancestors, though, this was an early death. Of all the northern Kings before Arvegil - excepting those slain in battle - only two had lived less than two hundred years: his father Argeleb II and his grandfather Araphor.

Arvegil ruled Arthedain for seventy-three years, and was succeeded by his son, who ruled as Arveleg II, upon his death in 1743.

Etymology
Arvegil is Sindarin for "Royal Sword" from ara- meaning "royal, king", and megil (becoming lenited to vegil) meaning "sword".
Peter C. Fenlon, Jr. (1955-) is an American table-top game designer/author and illustrator. He was the former president and one of the founders of Iron Crown Enterprises, and contributed extensively to the Middle-earth Role Playing game.

In the late 1990s, Pete Fenlon and Coleman Charlton, his long-time colleague from ICE, joined the Mayfair Game company.

The Fenlon Style
As an illustrator, Fenlon is especially known for his maps of Middle-earth. These were a large-scale map of the continent of Middle-earth (first released in 1982 as An Artist's Interpretation of Middle Earth) and several smaller-scale maps of different regions of Middle-earth (most of whom were printed in Northwestern Middle-earth Map Set). The smaller-scale maps were often included as separate color fold-outs with the MERP 1st Ed. modules. With MERP 2nd Ed., no new maps were released.

Fenlon's maps have continued to have an explicit influence on later Middle-earth gaming cartographers (e.g., Thomas Morwinsky and Sampsa Rydman), and his continental map has been discussed and revised in the magazines Other Hands and Other Minds.

The characteristical maps of Fenlon have even created an expression known as 'Fenlon Style maps'. In January 2008, the Cartographer's Annual released a Pete Fenlon style pack for use with ProFantasy Software cartography tools.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a 14th century manuscript. In 1925, J.R.R. Tolkien and E.V. Gordon published a scholarly edition of it. It was not a translation, though Tolkien did make one: it was published later along with his translations of Pearl and Sir Orfeo.

This edition is now out-of-print, but should be available at university libraries.

Back Cover (2nd edition)
The study of Sir Gawain, the finest of all the English medieval romances, was signally advanced by the publication in 1925 of the edition by the late Professors Tolkien and Gordon. This remained the most widely used text of the poem; but after forty years the time came for revision. The new edition pursues the aim of the first – to present an accurate text pleasantly, with sufficient apparatus to enable a reader to understand the rich but difficult language, and so to reach for himself an informed appreciation of the poem. The Text, and the iniquely full glossary, were revised to take account of recent views. The Introduction, Notes, and Linguistic Appendix were largely rewritten; and the book was entirely reset.
Cirith Gorgor is a Black Metal Band.

History
Cirith Gorgor, initially named Dark Sorceress, was founded by the two guitarists Asmoday and Astaroth Daemonum in late. The line-up was completed when Levithmong (drums) and Lord Mystic (bass) shortly afterwards joined the band. In the course of 1996 Nimroth (vocals) replaced the band’s first vocalist who was dismissed due to a lack of motivation.

The band name was chosen because it represents a common interest within the band, a great love for the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, and it symbolises the haunted pass to Death. A variety of interests is also to be found in the lyrics, of which the main inspiration springs from the intense antipathy towards all organised religions.

A period of frequent rehearsals ensued and more songs were composed, which eventually led to the recording of Cirith Gorgor’s first demo "Mystic Legends..." (1997), produced in the band’s rehearsal place. 350 copies were soon sold out.

About a year later Cirith Gorgor signed with Osmose Productions, after which the debut album "Onwards to the Spectral Defile" was released in 1999. Immediately after the recordings of this album Asmoday decided to leave the band because of personal circumstances. In spite of this loss the band soon regained full strength again when Marchosias (guitar) entered the legion and they were able to execute several more live performances, which up till now had included shows with Behemoth, Aeternus, Asphyx and Testament.

After positive reviews and live shows the band started composing their second album "Unveiling the Essence" for release in 2001, which was once again released by Osmose Productions. The typical aggressive yet melodic Cirith Gorgor style was consolidated and the new album received good reactions.

Then, after successful gigs with Enthroned, Dead Head and Hades Almighty, Cirith Gorgor’s second founding member Astaroth Daemonum also decided to quit the band because it proved impossible to combine full dedication to the band with his other daily life activities. At this time the band’s label also chose to end the cooperation with Cirith Gorgor. The band, however, remained motivated and started working on new material.

A self-financed promo titled "Demonic Incarnation" released in 2002 was recorded and came to the attention of German label Ketzer Records. Two of the songs featured on the promo were released on a limited edition 7" EP titled "Through Woods of Darkness and Evil" (2002 - 666 copies) through a cooperation between Ketzer and Regimental (USA).

Also a new guitarist was found shortly after recording the promo: Inferno, coming from Dutch black metal band Tartaros, joined forces and was involved in the creation of Cirith Gorgor’s new album "Firestorm Apocalypse - Tomorrow Shall Know the Blackest Dawn." The album was released in July of 2004 by Ketzer Records. In the following year Cirith Gorgor did a European tour with Lux Ferre and Daemonlord.

With the help of Mor Dagor guitarist Pestilence a new track, entitled "Demonic Incarnation", was recorded, which was released later in 2005 as a split 7" EP with Mor Dagor.
Eöl, known as the Dark Elf, was an Elf of the Elder Days. It is said that he belonged to the Avari of the Tatyar who eventually reached Beleriand.
History
<center></center>

Eöl was originally part of the royal house of King Elu Thingol. Eöl was unhappy in his homeland of Doriath, and when the Girdle of Melian was raised around the kingdom, he left to dwell in the dark forest of Nan Elmoth, east of his homeland.

Eöl was a skillful craftsman and master sword smith. Among his greatest works were two swords made from the iron of a meteorite, Anglachel and Anguirel. Anglachel he gave to Thingol as payment for dwelling in Nan Elmoth, and it would later become the sword borne by Túrin Turambar. Eöl's smith craft was especially admired by the Dwarves, and he shared a rare friendship with the Dwarves of Nogrod and Belegost in the Blue Mountains. Eöl also devised the metal known as galvorn, from which he forged the armor that he used when traveling far from Nan Elmoth.

In the early third century of the First Age, Eöl came upon Aredhel, the sister of King Turgon and called the White Lady of the Ñoldor. She had become lost in Nan Elmoth, and Eöl used his enchantments to draw her deeper into the wood and ensnare her. She became his wife, and in the year 320 bore him a son, Maeglin.

In the summer of First Age 345, Eöl travelled into the Blue Mountains to feast with the Dwarves of Nogrod, and returned home to find that his wife and son had left two days earlier. Mounting a horse, he gave chase, and eventually discovered them at the Ford of Brithiach. Realizing that Aredhel was returning to Gondolin with his son, Eöl followed them. He found his way to the Dry River, and that secret way led him to the gates of Gondolin itself. There he was captured and taken to the King.

Turgon at first welcomed Eöl as a kinsman, but under the King's Law one who had found the way to the Hidden City was not permitted to leave, on pain of death. Enraged at the loss of his freedom, Eöl chose death, for himself and his son, and cast a poisoned javelin at Maeglin. Aredhel stepped in front of her son, and the poison in the dart soon killed her. In punishment for his crime, the Gondolindrim cast Eöl over the steep cliff of the Caragdûr.

Etymology
The meaning of Eöl is unknown, and also to which language it pertains. The word is neither Quenya nor Sindarin. It has been suggested that the name could be an Avarin word.
