Philosophical concept
The Elvish word estel (the same in both Quenya and Sindarin) refers to a complex philosophical concept found in Elvish thought. This idea is best understood as trust or "faith", and the hope that comes from it: estel refers to the belief that Eru Ilúvatar, the Creator of the Universe (Eä), is good and that his designs for his creatures will ultimately be good as well, despite the troubles that seem to plague Arda, this world. Certain knowledge of what is to happen to the Elves after the end of Arda has thus been withheld from them, so that all they can rely on is estel. The Elven-king Finrod Felagund explained estel as an idea that "is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and first being. If we are indeed the Eruchin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any Enemy, not even by ourselves".

Estel is also connected to the more immediate hope found in the Children of Ilúvatar that keeps them from being overcome by the hardships of Arda Marred; the Valar refer to this gift as the ability to appreciate "the Unmarred that they discern in the Marred". That is, the Children of Ilúvatar can see what is good about Arda in its present state, despite its corruption by Morgoth. It's estel that gives them this ability.

Estel is similar to, but more based on the heart than, amdir, another Sindarin word that can be translated as "hope".

Estel in Arda's History
According to the Elvish tradition, estel was one of only two things Eru demanded from his Children; the other was belief that he existed in the first place. Lack of estel was seen as a fault in the fëa of a person, and could have grave consequences: the most drastic example of a being lacking in estel is none other than that of Morgoth himself; his denial of the greatness of Eru led to his nihilism and despair. The failing of estel found in Finwë, the first High King of the Noldor, of his wife Míriel ever returning to him from the Halls of Mandos is another example. Finwë's decision to take another wife led to the strife between his sons that was instrumental to the tragic Fall of the Noldor. Ultimately, most poor choices of Elves and Men come from a failing in estel.

Estel and Men
Unlike the Elves, the foundation of estel in Men was said to have been shaken because of their corruption by Morgoth in the earliest days of their race. Because they had denied the supremacy of Eru and taken Melkor as their God, they could no longer believe with certainty that Eru would accept them. This lack of estel in Men had an effect on their view of their mortality, which was originally their Gift from Eru.

Other versions of the legendarium
In an early version of the Many Partings chapter, Gandalf gives to Frodo and Sam the names Bronwe athan Harthad ("Endurance beyond hope") and Hartad Uluithiad ("Hope unquenchable"), with Harthad being the Noldorin word for hope.
The Ainur (singular Ainu) were divine spirits, the "Holy Ones". They were the first beings created by Ilúvatar, the "order" of the Valar and Maiar, made before Eä.

History
Origins
Creation of the Ainur
The Ainur were the first, and mightiest, beings created by Ilúvatar before the beginning of the World. The Ainur were the "offspring of Ilúvatar's thought", and each was given understanding only of that part of the mind of Ilúvatar from which they came. The exception to this was Melkor, the greatest of the Ainur, who had a part of the gifts of all the others.

Although all Ainur are made of the thought of Ilúvatar, in His mind some were siblings. Thus for instance, Melkor and Manwë were considered brothers.

The Ainur were "kindled with the Flame Imperishable". Ilúvatar instructed them in music, until he brought them together to make the Music of the Ainur; the great song that created the Vision of Ilúvatar and ultimately the real World.

Within Eä
Through the Music of the Ainur, Ilúvatar created a Vision of the World, and explained much of its nature and destiny to them – so the Ainur have much knowledge of the World, but are not omniscient. Then Ilúvatar granted the World true being. Many of the Ainur desired to descend into it and form it in readiness for the coming of the Children of Ilúvatar (Elves and Men). Fourteen of these great Ainur became the Valar, or Powers of Arda. The fifteenth, Melkor, turned aside from that path and became known as Morgoth, the Dark Enemy. The many lesser Ainur that accompanied the Valar into Arda are known as Maiar.

Those Ainur who entered the World at its beginning remain bound to it until its end. Though Melkor was eventually thrown into the Void by the others, he is prophesied to return before the End. Little is known of the ultimate future of the Ainur, even by themselves, but it is said that, after the death of the World, they will make a Second Music, even greater, with the race of Men.

Characteristics
The Ainur are immortal, angelic beings. Nonetheless they do possess gender. Those who later descended to Arda took on common male and female forms to appear to the Elves in, and have an inherent male or female gender even when formless. This is because their gender is based on their being, which is independent of any physical form they may assume. But unlike the Children of Ilúvatar, they do not actually need hröar. Nevertheless, they can take tangible physical form called fana, but this is a manifestation of their spirit and they do not technically have bodies the way Elves and Men do. As such, an Ainu cannot quite be killed. However, Ainur's spirits can be weakened, in ways that hinder their ability to take shapes, influence the world, or even affect the world at all.

For example, Sauron's spirit was repeatedly weakened by successive damage when he was defeated by Huan in the form of a Werewolf; in the Downfall of Númenor which destroyed his ability to take fair form; his defeat in the War of the Last Alliance when he lost the ability to take a physical form, and had to regain his power in the East for about 1000 years; and finally with the destruction of the One Ring which broke his ability to affect the world at all, reducing his spirit to a state that could no longer do harm. None of these things killed Sauron outright. A similar fate faced Saruman when he was murdered by Gríma – because of his evil deeds, his spirit was allowed to fade as Sauron's spirit faded.

But when Gandalf the Grey was killed by Durin's Bane, not only was he brought back, but his spirit was significantly restrengthened into an even more powerful form, Gandalf the White.

Melkor though was the most powerful of the Ainur (greater than the rest of the Valar combined), and his spirit, instead of fading away, was exiled from Arda altogether through the Door of Night into the Void. It's prophesied that Melkor would return at the Dagor Dagorath in Arda's last days for one final confrontation against the Valar and the Children of Ilúvatar. In this confrontation, it is stated that he is "destroyed".

Line of Melian
One of the Maiar named Melian, alone of all the Ainur, wedded an Elf, King Elu Thingol of Doriath. From her, a strain of the Ainur entered the bloodlines of the Elves and Men, passed down through generations. Elrond and Elros were Melian's descendants as well as the Kings of Númenor and their heirs.

Etymology
Ainur.mp3
The word Ainu is Quenya and is related to words for "holiness" such as aina; the female form is given as Aini.

It is derived from the original Valarin word for Ainur, which was Ayanûz.

They are also referred to as Great Ones or Holy Ones.
Like the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, The Hunt for Gollum is to be produced in New Zealand with visual effects by Wētā FX. No details about the plot have been revealed except that the film will feature Gollum and "explore storylines yet to be told."
Development
Early development
Jackson first publicly expressed interest in filming "Gandalf and Aragorn hunting Gollum, and his capture by Orcs" in August 1998, having come to the realization while working on a draft of The Fellowship of the Ring "several weeks" earlier that he "just couldn't put [it] into the movie." At the time, the idea was to shoot this as additional material and add it into the extended edition, but by 2002 Jackson had discussed filming a "Lord of the Rings prequel", along with The Hobbit, with composer Howard Shore and executive producer Mark Ordesky. After The Return of the King, it was expected that The Hobbit, along with this film, would proceed "in some short order."

While talking about The Hobbit in September 2006, Jackson said "You could even get into Gollum's sneaking into Mordor and Aragorn protecting The Shire. That's what we'd do. Love to work with Viggo again." Mortensen, hearing this remark in 2012, said it "sounds like a lot of fun." When Guillermo del Toro was hired to direct The Hobbit for Jackson in 2008, they were also working on this "bridge" film as an option for the second film. "We got really excited," said del Toro, "because this second film is not a ‘tag on’, it’s not ‘filler,’ it’s an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative."

Referring specifically to Gollum's part in the events, del Toro said "Gollum has a rather fascinating arch to go through and his alliance to Shelob or his period of imprisonment in Thranduil's." Jackson added that "There's an awful lot of incident that happens during that 60 year gap. At this stage, we're not imagining a film that literally covers 60 years, like a bio-pic or documentary. We would figure out what happens during that 60 years, and choose one short section of time to drop in and dramatise for the screen." Both filmmakers said agreed that "apart from extreme circumstances, we would never recast a character who appeared in the LOTR trilogy."

By October, however, it seems that they settled on telling The Hobbit itself in two parts: Jackson said "There was talk about doing ‘The Hobbit’ as one movie and making a ‘Hobbit,’ and ‘Lord of the Rings,’ bridge movie" but when they worked on the treatment in early 2009, they were surprised to realize "how much of the story you would have to lose" to keep The Hobbit as one film. The "bridge" film remained an option well into 2009, but del Toro was unwilling to commit to helming it, saying it is "not relevant anymore." Although Jackson reportedly said in August that the third film was off the table, in 2012 he revealed that "a third movie has always been in discussion.

Jackson had considered incorporating elements from this "bridge" film into The Hobbit proper: The White Council had already been integrated into The Hobbit itself, but in 2015 Philippa Boyens revaled that they "always wished we could have had Aragorn in these films. Dearly, dearly wanted to...you know, to have Viggo back in these films." Jackson, also in the booth, elaborates: "We did try to figure out a way to get a cameo, even if it was a cameo, for Aragorn and actually for Arwen, too: we tried to have Liv Tyler in the film."

Back in 2009, Viggo Mortensen said that "Obviously, as an actor who originated on film that role, I’d rather finish the job, all things being equal - meaning, is it a good script, and do they have their shit together - than see another actor do it." Some time after this, he recieved an availability call from Jackson: "I said sure, if Aragorn is supposed to be in the bridge story, because he’s not in The Hobbit,” he said. However, Jackson later revealed that since that call, they "could think of no way of doing it." Having no further contact, Mortensen concluded in November 2011 that "Aragorn is half elf and also lives a couple hundred years or more and he could be in a bridge, but I have to assume it isn't going to happen." He said he would still be open to playing Aragorn "if it seemed sensible to do so."

In the director's commentary to The Battle of the Five Armies in 2015, Boyens and Jackson remained open to the idea of making more films, and mused about what Jackson jokingly calls "A fictitious film 3.5" which Boyens goes on to call "The Hunt for Gollum." Boyens said it could include "a few other things that go on which are really interesting" like Saruman's search for the Ring. She elaborates:<blockquote>Aragorn really is one who tracks Gollum and ends up...and finds him eventually in the Dead Marshes, and he's taken to the Elves. And he's taken to the Elves, and because of the kindness of the Elves - and Legolas is one of his keepers... in Mirkwood, and through their kindness he actually manages to escape. Or has he escaped? Or was he let loose?</blockquote>

Revival
Having "really enjoyed working with Kenji Kamiyama, who directed War of the Rohirrim," Jackson decided to revive the plans for this film and chose Andy Serkis to direct. Serkis remembers being approached around October 2023. By June 2024, they were about to start writing, and by December they had been in the process of writing the story treatment. Serkis later estimated they would finish writing by the middle of the year and begin "scouting locations and building [sets]" with shooting due to begin towards the beginning of 2026. As a result, the release date for the film was ultimately delayed from 2026 to December 2027.

Plotline
The exact events the film covers remain undisclosed. Strictly speaking, Aragorn's hunt for Gollum begins during the events depicted in Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring, and in October, Boyens said the story "falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines Of Moria."

However, a hunt for Gollum is begun by the Silvan Elves after Gollum first leaves the mountains in search of Bilbo, and in December Jackson said the film "tells us what happened to Gollum between The Hobbit - end of The Hobbit - and the beginning of The Lord of the Rings."

Boyens also alluded to other storylines: ""we are finding a lot of threads of story that are surprising in there when you really go in there and examine it." Events as varied as Aragorn's sojourn in Lorien with Arwen, the fall of Balin's Colony and much else occur concurrent to the time of the Hunt. "You see the layers and layers of story that’s underneath there and how interconnected they all are," she adds.

She adds that "We get to go to some places that we've never been before" in Middle-earth, and shared that one of the practicalities they were busy figuring out in the writing is "How does he [Aragorn] pick up his scent? How does he find his trail, how does it happen?"
In Quenya, verbs are conjugated in a similar manner to that of English or other languages, with multiple pronouns and tenses.
Verbs are conjugated by adding suffixes to the stem. Here is a chart of suffixes.
The aorist tense is somewhat irregular in that the suffix ë changes to i if any further suffixes are added. There is also the addition of the specific conjugation for "I," as in myself.

The present tense is formed by lengthening the stem's vowel by adding an acute accent (í, é, á, ó, ú) and adding suffix -n.

The perfect tense is formed by adding the prefix o- and suffix -ië.

The past tense is formed by "incorporating" the suffix -në into the word, sometimes placing the n within the stem.

The future tense is formed by adding the suffix -uva.
