Guys, please take a look for this MediaWiki extension. I actually didn't try it myself but it seems very helpful especially for encyclopedical wikis like TG. --Vardo 08:53, 31 July 2006 (EDT)
:It is definitely worth looking into though I still am having trouble seeing how much it can improve efficiency without adding complexity. Let's list examples in which the extension could be utilized as well as the Pros/Cons of installing such an extension. Thanks for bringing this up Vardo. --Hyarion 12:52, 31 July 2006 (EDT)

I should read more on this and maybe install it on my local box to test it. I'll tell about my outcomes. My current vision (as far as I know about semantic systems and RDF) is that it should allow authors to set semantic relationships between things - for example, an author can additionally define that "Arathorn" is related to "Aragorn" as "father". Then, a user or any external agent is able to make queries like "who was the Aragorn's father?" and so on.

Of course, I should investigate this extension in depth to provide all pros and cons to community.
Hi! First of all, thank you all for the great work! I'm a newcomer here and there are my suggestions what might we (me, personally) do to make TG even better:

* More linguistic info. I noticed some articles lack info on etymology of their titles and others have it inside the text so it is hard to find what a title means. Maybe we could put this info in the special template blocks (like for pronounciation now) and provide some formalism by creating special templates/categories like "Sindarin term", "Westron term" and so on. I also started to make original Tengwar transcriptions for the Elvish titles (see how it looks on Arnor for instance). If someone would like to get on it too, Online tengwar transcriber makes a great help in that.

* More references. To make the information looking reliable and verifiable I think it is a good idea to provide every article with the references to work of JRRT (or others) where this info come from (book and chapter, as minimum). We also can create another template box for this purpose.

* Geographical articles need maps. Now I play with artificial 3D landcapes generator, so I think I'll be able soon to make few ones in "Google sat maps" style (at least for main realms and regions) without copyrights and licensing issues.

* More chronological info. I think we can follow the Wikipedia way to have special category of articles for separate years.

These ideas come from my first glance on TG. Let's discuss it.

--Vardo 04:28, 25 July 2006 (EDT)
----
:Welcome to Tolkien Gateway, Vardo, and your new status of being one of those few "Gatekeepers". I would like to respond to some of your points:

* More linguistic info I would agree with this. We have only just starting placing root words into the encyclopedia, and it is hard to get it all done in 4500+ articles.

* More references I agree with you here too.

* Geographical articles need maps At last, someone else who has knowledge of computer-generated landscapes, and much more than I do. That sounds excellent in the highest degree. Recently I have been using Bryce for objects rather than landscapes (see :Image:Tilkal-red.jpg, :Image:Tilkal-green.jpg. I also have a temporary one of Gondolin, but I can't remember the title at the moment). I did, however, create one of Númenor: :Image:Numenor.jpg. Anyway, I have only been working on Bryce for less than a year, and it will be nice to have someone who knows what he's doing.

* More chronological info Sounds good. Can you elaborate on this or is it just a thought that you haven't delved into?

:As I said, welcome to Tolkien Gateway. Thanks for jumping right in. --Narfil Palùrfalas 08:35, 25 July 2006 (EDT)

::Oh, one thing about that link. Is there an English translation of that? If not, could you direct me to where the actual transcriber is? I don't speak Polish or whatever that language is, and can't figure it out. --Narfil Palùrfalas 08:44, 25 July 2006 (EDT)

:::Nevermind. There was a problem with your link that I corrected, and I had been directed to the Main Page. I clicked on your link again and now I know. Thanks anyway. --Narfil Palùrfalas 08:45, 25 July 2006 (EDT)
----
* More linguistic info - Definitely, we recently started adding an article for every Quenya or Sindarin, etc. word, such as Ael. It will take a while to go through all of the articles but it is definitely needed and will look great when completed. I'm very excited that I found this extension which will allow us to embed Tengwar images into the articles quite easily. Hopefully the installation goes smoothly as it needs quite a few programs and isn't very user-friendly. I hope to have it functioning soon.

* More references - You can never have too many references and we have very few, this is something else I would like to concentrate on. In the future we can be more strict in making sure any new content added has a reference as its much easier to catch it then than to have to go back through everything adding the references.

* Geographical articles need maps - I'm sure Narfil will be excited he has someone to work with as creating our own maps will be a great unique aspect as maps are hard to come by with the Tolkien Estate being so adamant about taking them offline. I can't wait to see some of your work.

* More chronological info - Absolutely, just a few days ago I went through and added an article for almost every year since J.R.R. Tolkien's birth, but they are minimal stubs and still need a lot of work.

Welcome to TG and thanks for all your input! --Hyarion 12:19, 25 July 2006 (EDT)
----
Thanks!

* More linguistic info - yeah, I noticed the articles for Elvish roots and they're looking great.

Tengwar extension - it is really good! I'm waiting for it eagerly. Does it make sense for me to continue attaching Tengwar PNG's to the articles (by random selection as I'm doing now)?

* More references - I agree, it is a damn lot of work to go back through every article for to add references. IMHO, for now we can think what infrastructure we could provide to encourage the authors to use references (maybe special template boxes and so on). I also have an idea to have a special category for articles which need references, like Wikipedia does.

Anyway, I'll try to add references as possible - at least for the most popular articles - major characters, events, objects etc. I'm not a big expert in Silmarillion and Elder Days but I know LotR quite well to remember what happened in what chapter so it is not a big problem for me. I also have almost all Tolkien in electronic format that makes a great help because I can search quickly through it.

I should say that I'm not a native english-speaker and have some problems with English so I'm going to spend more time for improving existing articles (adding references, maps, etymologies and so on) rather than creating new ones.

* Geographical articles need maps - please take a look to the example: :Image:Middleearth_3d.jpg. It is a reduced image of the whole scene . I think, for the maps of regions I'll render separate pieces and process them with graphic editor to add labels and other stuff.

* More chronological info

just a few days ago I went through and added an article for almost every year since J.R.R. Tolkien's birth - it is great but I meant years of Arda - of course not every of thousands, but only those we know something about (already mentioned in other articles). Or maybe it is better to have a category for each year so when a reader go in the year category, she gets the list of articles on the events of that year.
The mansions of the Elder King, Manwë, and his spouse Varda Elentári, on the peak of Taniquetil. Ilmarin is translated as 'mansion of the high airs', an appropriate name for a dwelling-place built on the tallest peak of all the mountains in the world. The birds, servants and allies of Manwë, were said to travel to and from Ilmarin bringing news from the outer world.

Though the name Ilmarin properly refers to the dwellings of Manwë and Varda, it seems at times to be used as a poetic name for Taniquetil itself. For example, in The Fellowship of the Ring II 8 (Farewell to Lórien), Galadriel sings of the 'strand of Ilmarin'. A 'strand' is a shoreline, so she cannot mean this literally - instead, she seems to be describing the seaward lands beneath the mountain on which Ilmarin stood.

The Tengwar are an artificial script which was invented by J.R.R. Tolkien. In his works, the Tengwar script, supposedly invented by Fëanor, was used to write a number of the Languages of Middle-earth, including Quenya and Sindarin. However, it can also be used to write other languages, such as English (most of Tolkien's tengwar samples we know of are actually in English). The word tengwar is Quenya for "letters". The corresponding singular is tengwa, "letter".

Internal History and Terminology
According to Appendix D of Quendi and Eldar from The War of the Jewels, Fëanor when he created his script introduced a change in terminology. He called a letter, i.e. a written representation of a spoken phoneme (tengwë) a tengwa. Previously, any letter or symbol had been called a sarat (from *sar "incise"), especially the alphabet of
Rúmil of Valinor on which Fëanor supposedly based his was known as Sarati, but became later also known as "Tengwar of Rúmil". The plural of tengwa was tengwar, and this is the name by which Fëanor's system became known. Since, however, in commonly used modes, an individual tengwa was equivalent to a consonant, the term tengwar in popular use became equivalent to "consonant sign", and the vowel signs were known as ómatehtar. By loan-translation, the tengwar became known as tîw (singular têw) in Sindarin, when they were introduced to Beleriand. The letters of the earlier alphabet native to Sindarin were called cirth (singular certh, probably from *kirte "cutting", and thus semantically analogous to Quenya sarat). This term was loaned into exilic Quenya as certa, plural certar.

External History
Precursors
The sarati, described in Parma Eldalamberon 13, a script developed by Tolkien in the late 1910s, anticipates many features of the tengwar, especially the vowel representation by diacritics (which is found in many tengwar varieties), different tengwar shapes and a few correspondances between sound features and letter shape features (though inconsistent).

Even closer to the tengwar is the Valmaric script, described in Parma Eldalamberon 14, which Tolkien used from about 1922 to 1925. It features many tengwar shapes, the inherent vowel [a]found in some tengwar varieties, and the tables in the samples V12 and V13 show an arrangement that is very similar to the one of the primary tengwar in the classical Quenya "mode".

Jim Allan (An introduction to Elvish, ISBN 0-905220-10-2) compared the tengwar with the Universal Alphabet of Francis Lodwick of 1686, both on grounds of the correspondance between shape features and sound features, and of the actual letter shapes. A corresponance between shape features and sound features is also found in the Korean Hangul alphabet. It is not known whether Tolkien was aware of these previous scripts. However, considering the sarati and the valmaric script, it is conceivable that Tolkien developed the idea of a general correspondance between shape features and sound features by himself.

The Tengwar
The tengwar were probably developed in the late 1920s or in the early 1930s. The Lonely Mountain Jar Inscription, the first published tengwar sample, dates to 1937 (The Hobbit, most editions). The full explanation of the tengwar was published in Appendix E of The Lord of the Rings in 1955.

The Mellonath Daeron Index of Tengwar Specimina (DTS) lists 67 known samples of tengwar by Tolkien.

There are only few known samples predating publication of The Lord of the Rings (many of them published posthumously):

A few other samples, e.g. a tengwar mode for Gothic are known to exist, but remain unpublished to date .

Spelling and Pronunciation
Modes
Just as with any alphabetic writing system, every specific language written in tengwar requires a specific orthography, depending on the phonology of that language. These tengwar orthographies are usually called modes.

Some modes, called ómatehtar (or "vowel tehtar") modes, represent vowels with diacritics called tehtar ("signs"; corresponding singular: tehta, "sign"), while other modes, called "full writing" modes, represent vowels by normal letters. Some modes map the basic consonants to /t/, /p/, /k/, and /kʷ/, while others use them to represent /t/, /p/, /tʃ/, and /k/. Some modes follow pronunciation, while others rather follow traditional orthography. The "full writing" modes are sometimes called "Beleriandic modes" because a well-known "full writing" mode is called the "mode of Beleriand".

Since the publication of the first official description of the Tengwar at the end of The Lord of the Rings, others have created modes for other languages such as English, Spanish, German, Esperanto and Lojban.

Tengwar letters
The most notable characteristic of the tengwar script is that the shapes of the letters correspond to the features of the sounds they represent.

The letters are constructed by a combination of two basic shapes: a vertical stem (either long or short) and either one or two rounded bows (which may or may not be underlined, and may be on the left or right of the stem).

The principal letters are divided into four series (témar) that correspond to the main places of articulation and into six rows (tyeller) that correspond to the main manners of articulation. Both vary among modes.

Each series is headed by the basic signs composed of a vertical stem descending below the line, and a single bow. These basic signs represent the voiceless stop consonants for that series. For the classical Quenya mode, they are /t/, /p/, /k/, and /kʷ/, and the series are named tincotéma, parmatéma, calmatéma, and quessetéma, respectively; téma means "series" in Quenya.

In rows of the general use, there are the following correspondences between letter shapes and manners of articulation:
* Doubling the bow turns the voiceless consonant into a voiced one.
* Raising the stem above the line turns it into the corresponding fricative.
* Shortening it (so it is only the height of the bow) creates the corresponding nasal. It must be noted though that in most modes, the signs with shortened stem and single bow don't correspond to the voiceless nasals, but to the approximants.

Here is an example from the parmatéma (the signs with a closed bow on the right side) in the general use:

:<li>The basic sign (with descending stem) represents /p/</li>
:<li>With the bow doubled, it represents /b/</li>
:<li>With a raised stem, it represents /f/</li>
:<li>With a raised stem and a doubled bow, it represents /v/</li>
:<li>With a short stem and double bow, it represents /m/</li>
:<li>With short stem and single bow, it represents /w/</li>

In the classical Quenya mode, the rows are used differently:
:<li>With descending stem and double bow, we have /mb/</li>
:<li>With raised stem and double bow, we have /mp/</li>

There are additional letters that don't have regular shapes. They may represent e.g. /r/, /l/, /s/, and /h/. Their use varies considerably from mode to mode. Some aficionados have added more letters not found in Tolkien's writings for use in their modes.

Encoding Schemes
Non-Unicode
The contemporary de facto standard in the tengwar user community maps the tengwar characters onto the ISO 8859-1 character encoding following the example of the tengwar typefaces by Dan Smith. This implies a major flaw: If no corresponding tengwar font is installed, an awful string of nonsense characters appears.

Since there is not enough place for all the signs, certain signs are included in a "tengwar A" font which also maps its characters on ISO 8859-1, overlapping with the first font.

For each tengwar diacritic, there are four different codepoints that are used depending on the width of the character which bears it.

Other tengwar typefaces with this encoding include Johan Winge's Tengwar Annatar, Måns Björkman's Tengwar Parmaite, Enrique Mombello's Tengwar Élfica or Michal Nowakowski's Tengwar Formal (note that most of these differ in details).

The following sample shows the first article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights written in English, according to the traditional English orthography. If no tengwar font is installed, it will look awful since the corresponding ISO 8859-1 characters will appear. It should look similar to the picture at the top of the page.

<blockquote style="font-family: 'Tengwar Annatar', 'Tengwar Quenya', 'Tengwar Sindarin', 'Tengwar Formal', 'Tengwar Parmaite', 'Tengwar Elfica'; font-size: 1.2em">j#¸ 9t&5# w`Vb%_ 6EO w6Y5 e7~V 2{( zèVj# 5% 2x%51T`Û 2{( 7v%1+º 4hR 7EO 2{$yYO2 y4% 7]F85^ 2{( z5^8i`B5$i( 2{( dyYj2 zE1 1`N ]Fa 4^(6 5% `C 8q7T1T W w74^(69~N2º</blockquote>

Unicode
A proposal has been made to include the Tengwar in the Unicode standard.

The following Unicode sample is meaningful when viewed under a typeface supporting Tengwar glyphs in the area defined in the Tengwar proposal for the ConScript Unicode Registry (U+E000&ndash;U+E006F; see External links).

At the moments, the only typefaces that support this proposal are James Kass's Code2000 and Code2001.

The following sample repeats the above one according to the Unicode proposal. It will only display correctly if either of James Kass's fonts is installed.

<blockquote style="font-family: Code2000, Code2001; font-size: 1.2em;">                             </blockquote>
Fingon (Years of the Trees 1280 – First Age 472, aged approx. 2,580 years) was a High King of the Noldor in Beleriand during the First Age. He was the eldest son of Fingolfin, older brother of Turgon, Aredhel, and Argon1.

History
Fingon went with his father and people from Aman to Middle-earth at the beginning of the First Age. He achieved renown soon after for his daring rescue of Maedhros from Thangorodrim. Fingolfin gave Fingon a domain in Dor-lómin, in the west of Hithlum, where he did good service during the Siege of Angband; defeating Orcs that attempted to go around to the north and attack Hithlum from the west, and then later the first to fight against the Dragon Glaurung when he first came forth from Angband.

Fingon became High King when Fingolfin died fighting Morgoth after the Dagor Bragollach ("Battle of Sudden Flame"). Seven years later, Morgoth's forces invaded Hithlum, and Fingon was hard-pressed and outnumbered, but rescued by Círdan and his people of the Falas, who came up the Firth of Drengist in their ships.

In the Nirnaeth Arnoediad ("Battle of Unnumbered Tears"), Fingon was nearly victorious; but at the end he was killed by Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs.

Turgon became by right the High King of the Noldor, although after the battle he returned to the secrecy of Gondolin.

Other Versions of the Legendarium
In the published Silmarillion Fingon was the father of Gil-galad, but this was an editorial mistake by Christopher Tolkien, and is said "to have no wife or children". Argon does not appear in the published Silmarillion at all.

Etymology
Fingon's father-name was Findekáno (Quenya for "Skilled Hero"). Fingon is the Sindarin version of his father-name.

Valar_tengwar.png

The Valar (Quenya, sg."Vala") are the Powers of Arda who live on the Western continent of Aman.

The Valar were the fourteen powerful spirits of the race of the Ainur who entered Arda after its creation to give order to the world and combat the evils of Melkor. They dwelt originally on the Isle of Almaren, but after its destruction, long before the Awakening of the Elves, they moved to Aman and founded Valinor.

They were the greatest of the Ainur who witnessed the Vision of Ilúvatar and so came to create Arda. Melkor came to Arda to claim it for his own.

Manwë and Melkor fought, and Manwë called other spirits to help him in his battle. Among these were the other Valar and the Maiar. Melkor withdrew from the battle, and the others continued their creation of the World. But Melkor saw this, and returned to fight for control of Arda.

The Valar have no fixed shape, but often take the shapes of Men and Elves, or they can remain invisible.

The Valar are not Gods, though Men often mistake them as such. They are actually emissaries or regents of Ilúvatar, the monotheistic God of the world, who rarely directly intervenes in the world's course of events.

Names
These are the names of the Valar as they were known to the Eldar. In Middle-earth, they were known by other names of Sindarin origin; for example they called Varda Elbereth. Men knew them by many other names, and sometimes worshipped them as Gods. The Dwarves called Aulë, their creator, Mahal. It should be noted that, with the exception of Oromë, the names listed below are not actual names but rather titles: the true names of the Valar are nowhere recorded. Male Valar are called "Lords of the Valar"; females are called "Queens of the Valar," or Valier.

Lords of the Valar
* Manwë Súlimo, King of the Valar
* Ulmo, King of the Sea
* Aulë, the Smith
* Oromë Aldaron, the Great Rider
* Námo (Mandos), Judge of the Dead
* Irmo (Lórien), Master of Dreams and Desires
* Tulkas Astaldo, Champion of Valinor

Queens of the Valar (Valier)
* Varda Elentári, Queen of the Stars, wife of Manwë
* Yavanna Kementári (Palùrien), Giver of Fruits, wife of Aulë
* Nienna, Lady of Mercy
* Estë the Gentle
* Vairë the Weaver
* Vána the Ever-young
* Nessa the Dancer

Other names
The Aratar (Sindarin: Exalted) or High Ones of Arda are the eight greatest of the Valar: Manwë, Varda, Ulmo, Yavanna, Aulë, Mandos, Nienna, and Oromë. Melkor, the most powerful of all, is not counted among them.

Lórien and Mandos are brothers and are referred to collectively as the Fëanturi or "Masters of Spirits".

Relationships between the Valar
Ilúvatar brought the Valar (and all of the Ainur) into being by his thought, and may therefore be considered their father. However, not all of the Valar are siblings; where this is held to be so it is because they are so "in the thought of Ilúvatar".

It was the Valar who first practiced marriage, and later passed on their custom to the Elves. However only one such marriage among the Valar took place within the world, that of Tulkas and Nessa after the raising of the Two Lamps.

The latter is more likely to be its real meaning, as the word orthanc is a real Old English word (Old English being the linguistic basis for Rohirric); the Sindarin name being no more than a poetic coincidence.

History
Orthanc was built during the Third Age by the Númenóreans of Gondor out of a single piece of stone by an unknown process and then hardened. No known weapon could harm it. Orthanc rose up 500 feet above the plain of Isengard, and ended in four sharp peaks. Its only entrance was at the top of a high stair, and above that was a small window.

Orthanc housed one of the palantíri of the South Kingdom, and was guarded by a special warden until Isengard was mostly abandoned by Gondor. After that the tower was locked.

When Beren, Ruling Steward of Gondor gave Isengard to Saruman, he also gave the keys to Orthanc to the Wizard. Saruman made it his base of operations during his search for the One Ring and later his attack on Rohan during the War of the Ring.
After Saruman's defeat he was confronted by Théoden King, Gandalf and Aragorn, at which time Gríma Wormtongue, Saruman's servant, threw the Palantír at the group trying to kill them. Saruman was then locked in Orthanc and guarded by Treebeard, but subsequently escaped.

During the Fourth Age Orthanc was searched by Aragorn King Elessar, and he found there many heirlooms of Isildur, among them the original Elendilmir, the Star of Arnor, which proved that Saruman had found (and probably destroyed) Isildur's remains. Aragorn also found there a casket which obviously had been intended to hold the Ring.

Arnor, or the Northern Kingdom, was a kingdom of the Dúnedain in the land of Eriador in Middle-earth. The name probably means "Land of the King", from Sindarin Ara- (high, kingly) + (n)dor (land).

History
It was founded at the end of the Second Age (S.A. 3320) by Elendil, whose sons founded Gondor at the same time. The history of the two kingdoms is intertwined; both kingdoms are known as the Realms of the Dúnedain in Exile.

Before the foundation of Arnor there was already a sizable Númenórean population living there, a result of the slow emigration of Númenóreans which had started under Tar-Meneldur and Tar-Aldarion. Before the arrival of the Dúnedain Arnor was home to Middle Men of Edain stock, and the early colonists soon interbred with the indigenous population. Arnor was originally favoured over the more southern regions (Gondor) because the Elves under Gil-galad lived near it across the river Lhûn. However, in later days after the Númenóreans fell under Sauron's shadow they settled more to the south. This led to a situation where Elendil arrived in an area populated by people who, unlike his own Númenóreans, were mainly still friends with the Elves, and unlike Gondor to the south in Arnor much knowledge of the Elder Days was preserved.

Arnor's second king Isildur (also King of Gondor) was killed in T.A. 2 by Orcs in the disastrous Battle of the Gladden Fields. His three eldest sons were killed with him, but the fourth and youngest, Valandil, survived and became king of Arnor (T.A 2 or 10?).

Because Valandil and his heirs did not claim the throne of Gondor the realms were split, but Arnor's ruler kept the title High King, whereas in the south the ruler was 'just' King.

Decline
Arnor's capital was Annúminas on Lake Evendim, but by T.A. 861 Fornost Erain had become the capital instead as Annúminas became depopulated.

After the death of its tenth king, Eärendur, in T.A. 861, Arnor was shaken by civil war between the three sons of Eärendur. The eldest son, Amlaith, claimed Kingship over all Arnor but was reduced to only ruling the region of Arthedain as his kingdom, while the other sons founded the kingdoms of Cardolan and Rhudaur.

Arnor was refounded in name by Arthedain's king Argeleb I, when Cardolan placed itself under the suzerainty of Arthedain. However, even Arthedain was eventually destroyed. The people of Arnor were mostly wiped out by the wars, but the Hobbits survived in the Shire, men survived in Bree and probably other villages, and the Dúnedain of Arnor created new homes in the Angle south of Rivendell, where some of them became known as the Rangers of the North.

Reunited Kingdom
Aragorn II as King Elessar refounded the Kingdom of Arnor as part of the Reunited Kingdom, and again made Annúminas his capital city. After the fall of Sauron Arnor was safe again for human population, and although it remained less populated than Gondor to the south in time Arnor became a more densely populated area again, even if it had dwindled in size due to the independence of the Shire.

* The following samples presumably predate the Lord of the Rings, but they were not explicitly dated: DTS 16, DTS 17, DTS 18 - Elvish Script Sample I, II, III, with parts of the English poems Errantry and Bombadil, first published in the Silmarillion Calendar 1978, later in Pictures by J. R. R. Tolkien, as well as DTS 23 - So Lúthien, a page of the English Lay of Leithan text facsimiled in HoME 3:299.
