Aman ("Blessed Realm" or "Free from Evil" in Quenya, pron. [ˈaman]) is a continent that lies to the west of Middle-earth, across the great ocean Belegaer. It is the home of the Valar, and three kindreds of Elves: the Vanyar, some of the Noldor, and some of the Teleri. The island of Tol Eressëa lies just off the eastern shore.

Upon the destruction of Almaren in very ancient times, the Valar fled to Aman, and there established the realm of Valinor.
Description
Seeking to isolate themselves, they raised a great mountain fence, called the Pelóri, on the eastern coast; the highest of them was Taniquetil, on the peak of which was the throne of Manwe and Varda. They later set the Enchanted Isles in the ocean to prevent travelers by sea from reaching Aman.

For reasons unknown, the Valar left two lands outside the wall of the Pelóri: Araman to the northeast and Avathar to the southeast. Ungoliant, a great spider of unknown origin, had managed to escape notice in Avathar.

Aman was connected to the north with Middle-earth via the narrow straits of the Helcaraxe, a road that was taken by Melkor and later Fëanor when leaving for Beleriand.

History
The Elves who arrived to Aman in the Years of the Trees were called Amanyar or Calaquendi because they saw the light of the Two Trees. The Valar opened a cleft between the Pelóri, the Calacirya, so that the Light reached the Elves in their lands and cities, Eldamar, Tirion, Alqualondë and Tol Eressëa.

After the Exile of Feanor, the Noldor were not allowed to return to Valinor, and it was hidden from the Mortal lands. The Valar raised the Pelóri more, fortified Calacirya and raised the Enchanted Isles in the Shadowy Seas. There have been many attempts to reach the Undying Lands from Beleriand by ships, of which only Voronwë Aranwion survived; it is told that maybe Tuor was, alone of the mortals, allowed to find Aman before his son Eärendil.

Eärendil was the first known navigator to succeed in passing the Isles of Enchantment, guided by the light of the Silmaril, who came to Valinor to seek the aid of the Valar against Melkor, now called Morgoth. His quest was successful, the Valar went to war again, and also decided to remove the Isles.

After the War of Wrath and the destruction of Beleriand, Aman was no more connected to Middle-earth by the Helcaraxë but could be reached by the ships of the Elves.

Soon after this, the great island of Númenor was raised out of Belegaer, close to the shores of Aman, and the Three Houses of the Edain were brought to live there. Henceforth, they were called the Dúnedain, and were blessed with many gifts by the Valar and the Elves of Tol Eressëa. The Valar feared—rightly—that the Númenóreans would seek to enter Aman to gain immortality (even though a mortal in Aman remains mortal), so they forbade them from sailing west of the westernmost promontory of Númenor. In time, and not without some corrupting help from Sauron, the Númenóreans violated the Ban of the Valar, and sailed to Aman with a great army under the command of Ar-Pharazôn the Golden. The Valar collapsed a part of the Pelóri on this army, trapping it but not killing it. It is said that the army still lives underneath the pile of rock.

In light of this new development, the Valar decided to again isolate themselves from the other lands by a decisive method. The flat Arda was cloven in two, and made the rest round, so that a mariner sailing west along Eärendil's route would simply emerge in the far east. For the Elves, however, they crafted a Straight Road that peels away from the curvature of the earth and passes to Aman. A very few non-Elves are known to have passed along this road, including Frodo Baggins, Bilbo Baggins, and possibly Samwise Gamgee and Gimli.

Etymology
Aman derives from the sundocarmë A-MAN through the Intensification of its sundóma. From the same root also comes the name Manwë.

Aman was also called the Ancient West, Blessed Realm and the Undying Lands or just Valinor. In Adûnaic it was called Thâni anAmân or Amatthâni.

Immortality
There has been some debate whether the protagonists who sailed in the West became immortal or not. Robert Foster in his foreword to The Complete Guide to Middle-earth says that he did not provide death dates for those characters "for they still live". In reality, the Undying Lands were called like that because immortals dwelled in them, not because they granted immortality, something which becomes clear in the Akallabêth.

Ainur.mp3
The Ainur (pronounced [ˈaɪnur]; singular Ainu) were the 'Holy Ones', the first beings created by Ilúvatar, the 'order' of the Valar and Maiar, made before Eä.

Origins of the Ainur
The Ainur were the first, and mightiest, beings created by Ilúvatar before the beginning of the World. The Ainur were the 'offspring of Ilúvatar's thought', and each was given understanding only of that part of the mind of Ilúvatar from which they came. The exception to this was Melkor, the greatest of the Ainur, who had a part of the gifts of all the others.

The Ainur were 'kindled with the Flame Imperishable', which can be taken to mean that they were granted free will by their creator. Ilúvatar instructed them in music, until he brought them together to make the Music of the Ainur; the great song that created the Vision of Ilúvatar and ultimately the real World.

The Ainur and the World
Through the Music of the Ainur, Ilúvatar created a Vision of the World, and explained much of its nature and destiny to them - so the Ainur have much knowledge of the World, but are not omniscient. Then, Ilúvatar granted the World true being. Many of the mighty Ainur desired to descend into it and form it in readiness for the coming of the Children of Ilúvatar (Elves and Men). Fourteen of these great Ainur became the Valar, or Powers of Arda. The fifteenth, Melkor, turned aside from that path and became the first Dark Lord. The many lesser Ainur that accompanied the Valar into Arda are known as Maiar.

Those Ainur who entered the World at its beginning remain bound to it until its end. Though Melkor and his followers like Mairon, were eventually thrown into the Void by the others, he is prophesied to return before the end. Little is known of the ultimate future of the Ainur, even by themselves, but it is said that, after the great battle at the end of the World, they will make a Second, even greater, Music with the Children of Ilúvatar.

The Ainur are angelic beings, nonetheless they do possess gender. Those who later descended to Arda took on common male and female forms to appear to the Elves in, and have an inherent male or female gender even when formless. This is because their gender is based on their being, which is independent of any physical form they may assume.

Nature of the Ainur
The Ainur are fëar and are immortal, but unlike the Children of Ilúvatar, they do not actually need hröar. Nevertheless, they can take tangible physical form, but this is a manifestation of their spirit and they do not technically have bodies the way Elves and Men do. As such, an Ainu cannot quite be killed. However, Ainur's spirits can be weakened, in ways that hinder their ability to take shapes, influence the world, or even affect the world at all.

For example, Sauron's spirit was repeatedly weakened by successive damage in the Downfall of Númenor, his defeat in the War of the Last Alliance, and finally with the destruction of the One Ring. None of these things killed Sauron outright. But the Downfall of Númenor destroyed his ability to take fair form, the War of the Last Alliance destroyed his ability to take physical form, and finally the destruction of the One Ring broke his ability to affect the world at all, reducing his spirit to a state that could no longer do harm.

A similar fate faced Saruman when he was murdered by Gríma—because of his evil deeds, his spirit was allowed to fade as Sauron's spirit faded.

But when Gandalf was killed by Durin's Bane, not only was he brought back, but his spirit was significantly restrengthened into an even more powerful form, Gandalf.

Melkor though was the most powerful of the Ainur (greater than the rest of the Valar combined), and his spirit, instead of fading away, was exiled from Arda altogether through the Door of Night into the Void. The Vala Mandos prophesied that Melkor would return at the Dagor Dagorath in Arda's last days, and would revive the spirits of Sauron, Gothmog and all his former servants for one final confrontation against the Valar and the Children of Ilúvatar.

The Line of Melian
One of the Maiar named Melian, alone of all the Ainur, wedded an Elf, King Elu Thingol of Doriath. From her, a strain of the Ainur entered the bloodlines of the Elves and Men, passed down through generations. Elrond and Elros were Melian's descendants as well as the Kings of Númenor and their heirs.

Etymology
The word Ainu is Quenya and is related to words for 'holiness' such as aina; the female form (for beings like Melian or Árien, is given as Aini.

Supposedly it is derived from the original Valarin word for Ainur which was Ayanûz.

They are also referred to as Great Ones or Holy Ones.
Aegnor (S, pron. [ˈa͡ɛɡnor]) was a son of Finarfin and a Lord of the Noldor. He was terrible in battle, seemingly having a fire in his eyes, and his golden hair was stiff and straight. Even at a young age this was noticeable, though he was also known to be a very generous and noble spirit.
History
Aegnor was the elder brother of Galadriel and the younger brother of Finrod Felagund and Angrod. He followed the Exiles under the host of Fingolfin with his brother Angrod, because of his friendship with Fingon.

He settled with his brother on the northern slopes of Dorthonion, where, in the reflection of Aeluin, he saw young Andreth and they fell in love with each other. However he could not return her love during the Siege of Angband, since according to the law of the Eldar, no marriages happen during time of war. It is said that because of her sake, he would not take any Elven bride.

Together with Angrod he held the highlands of Dorthonion against Morgoth. Aegnor and Angrod were both slain in the Dagor Bragollach by the flames from Thangorodrim.

It was partially his death that brought about the memorable conversation titled Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth.

Like many mother-names, his name was prophetic, a reference to his valiance in battle. : Hello English speakers :P I began to add links from Tolkiendil to Tolkien Gateway and I thought it could be interesting that I add links on both sides at the same time (our wiki is closed, only members can edit). So I tried here but it doesn't seems to work, can you help ? Thank you ! ;) - Zelphalya 17:50, 26 May 2008 (EDT)
::Hey there Zelphalya. Unfortunately it looks like the MediaWiki software has trouble with the colons in the URL, however I believe this is fixed in the latest version of MW which we will be upgrading to shortly. As interwiki links can be tedious to add, I think we may want to automate the task with a bot, as long as we have the Tolkiendil article title and the equivalent Tolkien Gateway title, it shouldn't be too difficult. Keep up the great work at Tolkiendil, and I've added you to MSN. I'll let you know as soon as the colon issue is resolved. --Hyarion 18:29, 26 May 2008 (EDT)
Aeglos was the name for the spear of Gil-galad which was greatly feared by the enemy. It was broken when Gil-galad fell in combat against Sauron himself, on the slopes of Mount Doom S.A. 3431.

The spear is also spelled Aiglos in The Lord of the Rings, but according to The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion, Aeglos is in fact the more correct spelling.
Etymology
Aeglos means "snow-point" or "icicle". The element aeg means "point" from AYAK, "sharp, pointed".
