On Earth
- 1925 - J.R.R. Tolkien submits his resignation from Leeds, his employment will officially end December 31, 1925.
- 1955 – Tolkien gives the O'Donnell Lecture on Celtic, not his favourite language.
- 1972 - Felix Felton, who played Bilbo Baggins, the Black Captain and Sauron in The Lord of the Rings (1955 radio series), dies.
- 1982 - Mike Antonakos, who would voice Hadhod in EA's The Third Age, is born.
- 2004 - The 50th Anniversary Edition of The Lord of the Rings is published.
