Anaxarta
From Tolkien Gateway
Anaxarta is a Quenya word that perhaps refers to the Great Eagles of Manwë.[1][2]
Etymology
The etymology of the word is not obvious. Arguably, it is a compound of the words *anaxara "most rushing" plus arta "exalted". The word *Anaxararta would be simplified as Anaxarta.
The word *anaxara would contain the prefix an- "most". The stem *axara could be a cognate of ascar (root SKAR-) meaning "rushing".[2]
Other possibilities link the word to Máhanaxar.
Other forms
- Anaxartaron (gen.pl.) *"of the Great Eagles"
