Araval, too, played his part in the war with Angmar. The Lord of the Rings tells us nothing of his career, but The History of Middle-earth hints (in volume 12) that he was a diplomat and a warrior. In alliance with the Elves of Lindon and Imladris, he won at least one important victory over the Witch-king of Angmar. We are also told that he attempted the recolonisation of Cardolan, though this was prevented by the evil beings, the wights, sent there by the Witch-king some two centuries before.
When Araval came to the throne, Arthedain had been at war with Angmar for 500 years, and the Dúnedain had done very little to prevent the power of this old enemy spreading.

In the end, though, Araval's bravery counted for little. His grandson Arvedui, who was born in Araval's lifetime and just thirteen years after his great victory, was to see the final destruction of the kingdom of Arthedain.
Araval, in coalition with the elves of Lindon and Rivendell, went to battle with the forces of Angmar in 1851 and returned victorious. After this victory, Araval attempted to re-occupy Cardolan, by the evil wights terrified anyone who attempted to dwell there.

Araval ruled Arthedain for seventy-eight years, and was succeeded by his son Araphant.
Unfortunately, Araval's victory was of no avail in the long term: under Araphant, Araval's son, Angmar recovers and continues its attacks on Arnor, and under Arvedui, Araval's grandson, Angmar finally defeats Arthedain laying Arnor to waste and scattering the remnants of the Dunedain.
