In the "Doors and Gates" Category there are three articles listed, the Buckland Gate, the Hay Gate, and the North Gate, which all refer to the same object. This gate is referred to as the "Buckland Gate" near the end of the chapter "Homeward Bound" in The Return of the King (and is mentioned in the Index under "Buckland"). This same gate is referred to as the "Hay Gate" by Merry on the next page at the start of the chapter "The Scouring of the Shire" (and is also listed by itself in the Index). There is no Index entry for the North Gate but it is named as such when the Black Riders rode through after the attack on Crickhollow early in the chapter "A Knife in the Dark" in The Fellowship of the Ring.

I believe that there should only be one article that includes all three names (and the other two names should be redirects). However, which name should be preferred? "North Gate", although capitalized, seems to be more descriptive than a formal name (and is not in the index) so I would favor one of the other two.

Yes, the three articles definitely need to be merged. It does seem tricky to choose between "Buckland Gate" and "Hay Gate"... perhaps "Buckland Gate" since the name occurs first in the LotR..? --Morgan 20:28, 18 June 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Seeing as - from what I can see - there is one reference to each within The Lord of the Rings this does come down to personal preference. I favour Buckland Gate because it is much less ambiguous and because it is the name Hammond and Scull seem to prefer. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:32, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is probably the best known name too. -- Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 09:26, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Buckland Gate it is then. -- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  17:25, 19 June 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Works fine for me too, seeing the arguments given in this discussion. — Mithrennaith 17:06, 20 June 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
