Christopher Wiseman

Christopher Luke Wiseman (20 April 1893 Edgbaston - 25 July 1987 Milford-on-Sea) was the only friend of J.R.R. Tolkien who survived the First World War, during which he served as an Instructor Lieutenant in the Royal Navy.[1] He went on to become Headmaster of Queens College, Taunton.[2]

He became friends with Tolkien whilst studying at King Edward's School, Birmingham, which they attended from 1905. Together with Tolkien and their mutual friends Robert Gilson and Geoffrey Smith they formed the T.C.B.S. and he hosted at least one meeting at his London home in 1914.[3]

It was after Wiseman whom Tolkien's son was named Christopher.[4]

In biographical drama about J.R.R. Tolkien, called Tolkien, he was portrayed by actor Tom Glynn-Carney.
