Coldfells was a hilly region in which Aragorn's grandfather Arador was captured and slain by hill-trolls. Their geography is uncertain (all that is known for sure is that they lay to the north of Rivendell) but circumstantial evidence suggests that they were probably synonymous with the region known as the Ettenmoors. This is based on a description of the Ettenmoors in The Fellowship of the Ring I 12, where they're described as "the troll-fells north of Rivendell." It seems rather unlikely that there were two separate sets of troll-infested moorland in this area.

The Coldfells was a region in northern Eriador, on the foothills of the Misty Mountains.

History[edit | edit source]

In Third Age 2930, hill-trolls from the Coldfells took captive Arador, Chieftain of the Dúnedain, and slew him. Arador's son Arathorn II succeeded him, one year before the birth of the last Chieftain.[1]

Location[edit | edit source]

The location of the Coldfells is never specified beyond "north of Rivendell"[1], as it is not mentioned on any map (or anywhere else, for that matter). Circumstantial evidence suggests the Coldfells were near to or synonymous with the Ettenmoors, which is described as "the troll-fells north of Rivendell".[2]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

"Coldfells" is an English word, made up of "cold" + "fell." "Fell" is a dialectical word meaning a mountain, derived from Old Norse fjall and found in place names in parts of Britain that were once under Scandinavian rule.

Portrayal in adaptations[edit | edit source]

2007: The Lord of the Rings Online:

The Coldfells in the south-eastern portion of the region of the Ettenmoors where player vs player play takes place. The land has one keep called Tirith Rhaw that can be controlled by either the forces of Angmar or the Free Peoples of Middle-earth. The Free Peoples own two other locations in the area that cannot be controlled by the forces of Angmar. The non-player characters aligned with the Free Peoples are a faction known as the Coldfells.
