Dark Tree
From Tolkien Gateway
The Dark Tree is an abstract term within the story fragment entitled as The New Shadow.
History
Borlas uses the term "Dark Tree" in his conversation with Saelon as a description of the growing threat of evil in Middle-earth - its roots can never be fully destroyed, such that even if men constantly hew it, evil will arise again once those men turn their backs to it. Borlas then adds that the axes that hew the tree should not be left to the side or hanging from a wall, not even at the Feast of Felling.[1]
