The Far Downs were the downlands that marked the former western borders of the Shire, forty leagues (approximately 140 miles) west from the Brandywine Bridge.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Of the geography of the Far Downs, almost nothing is known, except that they were at the border of the Westfarthing and the town of Greenholm seems to have been built among the Downs.

Elanor Gardner married Fastred of Greenholm there in S.R. 1451. The next year (S.R. 1452) King Elessar extended the Shire's borders westward to the Tower Hills with the Westmarch laying in-between.[2] Fastred of Greenholm became the first Warden of Westmarch.[3]

Other versions of the legendarium[edit | edit source]

Within the Ballantine Books' paperback edition of The Fellowship of the Ring there was a misprint in the Prologue that incorrectly named the Far Downs as the Fox Downs.[4]
