As per the recent debate in both TG and its Discord server, started by User:Oberiko's discussion on the merger of 'Amrod' and 'Amras' articles, I'd like to make a forum thread on the broader "character-merger" issue.

Long story short: there are some pairings of characters (i.e. Eluréd and Elurín, Elladan and Elrohir, Amrod and Amras, Gelmir and Arminas, Folcred and Fastred, etc.) where keeping the articles separate seems unnecessary, given that the vast majority of the material in these articles is identical to their respective companion articles.

Another issue raised by User:Oberiko is the presence of articles for multiple characters (such as the majority of individuals in the Barahir's Outlaw Band) where most of these individuals - such as, say, Radhruin, Dagnir, etc. - are in all instances mentioned together, without any discrepant histories: they are, essentially, just names on paper.

The final issue (that I myself raised) are the multiple Durins: even though in my opinion, regardless of what conception of the legendarium one adhers to (i.e. that Durins are simply different Dwarves that resemble the original Durin, or that "Durins" are the same spirit coming back to Durin's renewed body after some interval of time) - I still think that all these disparate articles would best be served, both to editors and readers, by being presented under a single, all-encompassing article. - IvarTheBoneless (talk) 19:57, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

I, obviously, agree. A counterargument I've seen is that we should strive for an article for every character. Even if we accepted that, on principle, I don't think it's practical; the risk (reality) of article drift and effort required for double (or triple, or quadruple...) editing are, IMO, much stronger considerations.
