History
Harding was the son of Holfast Gardner and a great-grandson of Samwise Gamgee, the hero of the War of the Ring.[1] He became known as "of the Hill".[note 1]
Etymology
The name Harding comes from Old English hearding ("hard one, strong one").[3]
Notes
- ↑ Considering that Harding was the grandson of Samwise's eldest son, he should have become Samwise's heir and head of the Gardner Family, and presumably would have inherited Bag End, hence the epithet.
