Notes
- ↑ Discussing similarities between Karl May and Tolkien, the article includes a quote from a letter from Rayner Unwin (dated 3 August 1979): "[Christopher Tolkien] tells me that certainly Professor J. R. R. Tolkien's library did not contain any of the works of Karl May, but he would obviously not be able to say for certain that his father was unfamiliar with this author. All he can say is that as far as he knows, the similarities are coincidental."
- ↑ Quote from the article: “I first met Professor Tolkien in 1962. Just married, I was looking for part-time work, and the Professor needed someone to cope with the fan mail, which was piling up unanswered while he tried to pursue the many strands of his creative work - sorting of material for the Silmarillion (for example at that time he was torn between his prose and verse versions of the story of Beren and Lúthien), polishing his translations of Pearl and Sir Gawain, and corresponding with publishers about Tree and Leaf, then just in the press [in fact, not until 1963 or 1964]. I worked primarily in his well-known garage-library, where surrounded with texts ranging from huge Anglo-Saxon [manuscripts] in facsimile to brand new copies of his own works, and looking out over the beautiful garden, I typed his courteous replies to his fans all over the world. It was not long however before I started a family and gave up work. ”
