James Dundas-Grant (18961985) was a fellow Inkling with J.R.R. Tolkien. He was the commander of the Oxford University naval division, the cadets that followed classes at the University of Oxford.

In his memoir, "From an 'Outsider'" (1979), Dundas-Grant shared reminiscences of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Quote

"During this time he sometines received a large ham and groceries from Ireland. He would approach me with a conspiratorial glint in his eye."D.G.," he said, using the nickname he had given me "I've got a rather nice ham in my room. Would you care to come up tonight and have some? It was thus I came to meet his great friend Tolkien: tall, sweptback grey hair, restless. He read to us parts of his manuscript for Lord of the Rings, asking for criticism.Colin Hardie was there and sometimes our doctor friend Havard, known as Humphrey. His brother, too, was usually in attendance. It was at these sessions that I found out how much one learned just sitting and listening".
