- "No names are given in this region on the First Map, but subsequently my father pencilled in North Sea across G 4–5, and this I entered on my 1943 map, though inadvertently omitted on Map I."
- ― Christopher Tolkien in The Treason of Isengard, "XV. The First Map of The Lord of the Rings", "Maps I and IA"
The North Sea of Middle-earth[1] was a sea within Arda that was north of Belegaer and just west of the Icebay of Forochel.[2] Nothing else is known about the North Sea, and the name is only found pencilled on the first map made for The Lord of the Rings. It is unclear, however, if the North Sea was a sea in its own right, a predecessor of Belegaer, another name for the Icebay of Forochel, or a name for the northern parts of Belegaer.
History
Given that the North Sea is just west of the Icebay of Forochel, a place which was once apart of Beleriand, it seems possible that the North Sea was first formed as a result of the War of Wrath.
Islands
The North Sea has several islands and island chains which it shares with Belegaer.
