Silmarien was born in S.A. 521 to Tar-Elendil, the fourth King of Númenor and elder sister of Tar-Meneldur. She did not succeed her father (though later changes to the laws of Númenor would have made her Ruling Queen). Instead, she founded the line of the Lords of Andúnië from which the Kings of Gondor and Arnor were descended. Silmariën married Elatan of Andúnië; their son Valandil became the first Lord of Andúnië. She was given the Ring of Barahir by her father, and through her descendents this ring came to Elendil and his heirs.
