The Lighting of the Beacons is the fourteenth scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and the nineteenth scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (extended edition).<br />
<br />
==Synopsis==<br />
Pippin climbs a high peak in Minas Tirith to light the signal beacon calling for aid from Rohan. He attempts to be stealthy since Denethor disapproves of this. Gandalf, having sent Pippin on this mission, watches and hopes for success. Pippin spills oil on the stacked wood of the beacon; he lights the oiled wood, setting it on fire, much to the surprise of the guards. Gandalf sees the beacon is lit, and utters "Hope is kindled". Denethor sees this through a citadel window and is not impressed.<br />
<br />
The multitude of beacons existing in mountainous terrain between Minas Tirith and Edoras are successively lit, until Aragorn sees the signal. He rushes to the Golden Hall, to Théoden, shouting "The beacons are lit! Gondor calls for aid". <br />
<br />
==Differences==<br />
*In the books, it was not Pippin that lit the beacons, but the men of Gondor, as Denethor did order for the lighting of the beacons for aid, though he thought aid was unlikely. Pippin and Gandalf saw the lit beacons as they were riding to Minas Tirith.<br />
*Denethor also sent a rider, Hirgon to deliver the Red Arrow, who delivered it to Théoden, which convinced the King to ride out to Gondor's aid. However this does not take place in the films; it is solely the lit beacons that persuade Théoden to ride out.<br />

<br />
==Synopsis==<br />
Gandalf sits atop the spire of Orthanc. He grabs a moth that is fluttering by and imparts a message to it before sending it away. Below, the ring of Isengard has been transformed into a foundry and breeding ground for new Orcs and the large scale production of equipment. Saruman watches on as new Uruk-hai are bred, including a formidible Uruk named Lurtz.<br />
<br />
==Differences==<br />
*Lurtz is an original character to this adaptation.<br />
*Gandalf does not send a message to the outer world at Orthanc.<br />
*The entirety of this scene is fabricated for the movie in order to depict Saruman's rise as a power, though it largely adheres to how Tolkien describes Isengard. <br />

The Sword that Was Broken is the twenty-first scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and the twenty-fifth of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition). This scene was extended in the latter edition.<br />
<br />
==Synopsis==<br />
As Aragorn sits and reads near the plinth holding the shards of Narsil, Boromir approaches and gravely studies a painting showing Isildur raising his broken sword at Sauron. He notices the Aragorn and asks him who he is. In response, Aragorn tells him that he is a friend of Gandalf. Boromir smiles and turns towards the broken blade. He picks up the hilt with a sense of wonder and inspects it, but notices Aragorn staring at him, and hastily drops it, claiming it is "no more than a broken heirloom". <br />
<br />
After Boromir departs, Aragorn picks up the hilt and returns it to its place on the plinth. Arwen approaches and says "Why do you fear the past? You are Isildur's heir, not Isildur himself. You are not bound to his fate." Aragorn voices his concerns about his strength, but she reassures him that he will defeat the same evil faced by Isildur when his time comes.<br />
<br />
<br />
==Differences==<br />
This scene was almost wholly invented for the film.<br />
<br />
*Aragorn carries the shards of Narsil with him.<br />
*It is doubtful that Boromir would treat the shards of Narsil in such a flippant manner, as they would still be of great importance to a Man of Gondor.<br />
*While Aragorn does not wish to handle the Ring in the book, he does not have the self-doubt shown in this scene.<br />

The Sword that Was Broken is the twenty-first scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and the twenty-fifth of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition). This scene was extended in the latter edition.<br />
<br />
==Synopsis==<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
==Differences==<br />
This scene was almost wholly invented for the film.<br />
<br />

The Fate of the Ring is the twentieth scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and the twenty-fourth of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition). <br />
<br />
==Synopsis==<br />
Elrond and Gandalf watch the end of Frodo's discussion with Sam. Elrond remarks that Frodo has shown a remarkable resilience to the evil of the Ring, although the wizard says that the wound Frodo received on Weathertop will never fully heal. The two debate what should be done with the Ring; Gandalf is hesitant to ask more of Frodo as ring-bearer, however Elrond tells him that the Ring cannot stay in Rivendell, especially with the treachery of Saruman now known. Gandalf tentatively suggests that their hope must be placed in the hands of Men, with the Elves leaving Middle-earth. At this, Elrond gravely says that men are weak and that it is due to Men that the Ring still survives. He proceeds to tell Gandalf of how he "was there three thousand years ago" when Isildur cut the Ring from the hand of Sauron. There, he took Isildur into Mount Doom where the Ring could be destroyed, however Isildur refused to do so. <br />
<br />
Elrond comments that there is no strength left in the world of Men, but Gandalf tells him there is one who could unite their race and become the king of Gondor. Elrond solemnly tells him that "He turned from that path a long time ago. He has chosen exile."<br />
<br />
==Dfferences==<br />
<br />
*Elrond never took Isildur into Mount Doom. Isildur merely refused to destroy the Ring on the slopes of Mount Doom.<br />
*Elrond in the books is not contemptuous of Men. Indeed, there is truly little alternative, as neither Elves nor any Dwarves outside of Erebor are in a strategic position to confront Sauron directly.<br />
*Aragorn never refused the kingship or "chose exile" from his destiny.<br />

<br />
Steward was the traditional title of a chief counselor to one of the Kings of Gondor. <br />
<br />
==History==<br />
King Rómendacil I established the office of Steward, chosen by the King as a man of high trust and wisdom; Stewards were advanced in years since they were not permitted to go to war or to leave the realm. They were never a member of the Royal House.<br />
<br />
The Steward to King Minardil, Húrin of Emyn Arnen, was the founder of the House of Húrin. They were of royal Númenórean blood, but were not descendants of Elendil in the ruling line. After the time of Minardil, the Kings established the custom that Stewards are chosen from this House.<br />
<br />
During the time of the Steward Pelendur, this title became hereditary, passing the station of counselor from father to son, much like the Kingship.<br />
<br />
===Ruling Stewards===<br />
After the death of King Eärnur, who left no heir to the throne of Gondor, the Steward Mardil Voronwë became the first of the Ruling Stewards. Mardil was the first of the Stewards to administer Gondor, and his descendants did so for 25 generations. The Stewards watched over the throne until it could be reclaimed by a true King of Gondor, an heir of Elendil. <br />
<br />
===Reunited Kingdom===<br />
Soon after the death of Denethor II, Aragorn Elessar was crowned King of the Reunited Kingdom. The Steward Faramir, son of Denethor II, surrendered to the King his rod of office, but it was returned to him. Faramir nominally ruled briefly as Steward until Elessar's coronation, but since Faramir rested in the Houses of Healing, Prince Imrahil of Dol Amroth took his place much of that time. Though Faramir became Steward a month and a half before Elessar became King, Faramir is not considered one of the Ruling Stewards. King Elessar confirmed in Faramir and his descendants the office of Steward of Gondor, and granted him in addition the title of Prince of Ithilien, ensuring his line a position as counselor of the King.<br />
<br />
==Duties and Office==<br />
The Stewards used a simple white rod for their badge of office . Additionally, they sat a on a small throne that was in front of the throne used by the old kings of Gondor, letting that throne go unused in honor the fallen kings .<br />
<br />
==Other names==<br />
"Steward" in Quenya was Arandur, literally "king's servant, minister", clearly a combination of aran ("king") + -ndur ("servant").<br />

==Synopsis==<br />
Frodo is brought into Rivendell, where Elrond is briefly shown ministering to his wound in a montage. Frodo awakens to find himself in a furnished room. He hears a voice informing him of the date, October 24, and of the location: Elrond's house, in Rivendell. The voice belongs to Gandalf, who informs Frodo of his luck in surviving. Gandalf does not elaborate on why he failed to appear in Bree, saying only that he was delayed. In flashback, Gandalf recalls that he managed to escape when Gwaihir, whom he had summoned previously via a moth, flies to the top of Orthanc. Gandalf throws himself onto Gwaihir as he flies away from Isenguard, Saruman commenting that Gandalf has chosen death. Gandalf inform Frodo that Elrond healed him, but the three are soon interrupted by Sam and the other hobbits, who are glad to see that Frodo has recovered.<br />
<br />
==Differences==<br />
The scene is largely an abbreviation of the corresponding chapter from the book, though dialogue regarding the Ford of Bruinen and Gandalf's failure to appear is cut, instead being a flashback that Gandalf does not share with Frodo. Saruman is present at Gandalf's escape, when in the books he was not present. Gwaihir also appears because of Radagast informing the eagle to take news of the Ringwraiths to Isengard. <br />

==Synopsis==<br />
Frodo recovers some more and steps out onto a balcony, getting a view of Rivendell for the first time. Frodo and the other hobbits relax as the threat of the Ringwraiths seems to have ended for the present. Rivendell is shown to the viewer.<br />
<br />
Frodo realizes that Bilbo is present and runs to greet him. Bilbo warmly returns the greeting and says that he intended to return to the spots of his old journey, but soon found himself in Rivendell and declined to move on. Age has visibly affected Bilbo far more than when he had the Ring. Frodo sees the |book that Bilbo has been working on.<br />
<br />
Frodo catches Sam packing up. Sam says that since they have delivered the Ring to Rivendell, it was time they began preparing to return to the Shire. Frodo agrees with Sam and expresses a desire to return.<br />
<br />
==Differences==<br />
The scene is an abridgement of the same chapter from the book. The banquet Elrond hosts before his council is omitted. Bilbo seems to be somewhat older in the movie than he appears in the book, as in the book, Bilbo is able to return to Dale and Erebor during the time gap between chapters 1 and 2.<br />

Lego The Lord of the Rings: The Video Game is a video game by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Traveller's Tales. <br />
==Gameplay==<br />
The game follows the traditional formula common to most Lego games by Traveller's Tales. Each level represents events from the respective chapters of the movies they portray. The world is made of both Lego objects and non-Lego objects. Lego objects are interactable, whether that involves breaking them for studs (the in-game currency), assembling them out of component Lego pieces, or manipulating them in some fashion such as pushing a crate to use as a platform. Many characters have unique abilities, such as elven characters jumping higher than the rest of the cast, or wizard characters using magical staves to attack. The player will also engage in combat with enemies. When they are hit by enemy attacks or environmental hazards such as fire, the player loses a heart. Upon losing all hearts, the player character is broken apart, reappearing a few seconds later but losing studs in the process. The game features drop-in cooperative play, which means a second player can assume control of a different character at any time to assist the first player. They may also drop out and have the computer resume control over the character.<br />
<br />
The goal of each level varies. Some levels simply require the player to get to the end. Other levels may require more complex objectives, such as a defeating a powerful boss character or enacting a major environmental change. The first playthrough of each level is always in "Story Mode", which recreates the events of the movie. Subsequent playthroughs may be done in "Free Play" mode, where any character the player has unlocked may be used to gather additional items or unlock new areas. In between levels, players explore a recreation of Middle-earth and can complete small challenges for Mithril bricks, one of the game's main collectables. Players may also fast-travel by selecting the desired location or level on the map screen of the overworld.<br />

Of the Noldor in Beleriand is the fifteenth chapter of the Quenta Silmarillion section within The Silmarillion.<br />
<br />
==Synopsis==<br />
Previously, the elf Turgon had been led by Ulmo to the secret vale of Tumladen, hidden within the Encircling Mountains. This was a vast plain of grass with a great hill in the middle, where he decided to build a city that was reminiscent of Tirion. Turgon returned to his realm of Nevrast with the knowledge of this hidden place, and began planning to construct a refuge that would be hidden from the knowledge of Morgoth.<br />
<br />
<br />
After the Dagor Aglareb, Turgon led his people away from Nevrast back to Tumladen. There they began the construction of a great city upon the hill in the center of the plain. After fifty two years of secret toil and building they at last completed the city of Gondolin. This city was known only to Turgon and those of the Noldor who had followed him there. Before Turgon left Nevrast for the last time, Ulmo appeared to him again. He warned Turgon that though he would shield Turgon's final journey to Gondolin from prying eyes, he could not free Turgon from the Doom of Mandos that plagued the exiles. Gondolin would stand the longest of all the realms of the Noldor, but in the end it too must eventually fall. When that time would come, Ulmo would send Turgon a messenger to warn him of the impending doom. Ulmo bade Turgon to create unique armor and weapons for that messenger, who would come to Nevrast himself one day and take up the equipment. These would be a sign that the messenger was sent by Ulmo. Having done this, Turgon and his followers left Nevrast forever and went to Gondolin in secret.<br />
<br />
Turgon prospered in Gondolin, which became a thriving city. Gondolin's location was kept secret from Morgoth throughout the wars against the Dark Power. Gondolin produced many works, like Glingal and Belthil, forged at the image of the Two Trees of Valinor. As for Nevrast, it decayed as the years went on, and no one inhabited the city again.<br />
<br />
While Gondolin was being built, Finrod Felagund created his realm of Nargothrond, which would become a great city. His sister, Galadriel, would reside in the realm of Doriath. There Melian and she would often speak of Valinor, but Galadriel would never speak of what happened after the Darkening of Valinor began. But Melian was perceptive and wise, and she soon guessed that Galadriel was hiding something from her. Eventually, Galadriel admitted part of the truth, that the Noldor had not come as messengers of the Valar. However, she did not mention the First Kinslaying.<br />
<br />
Melian told Thingol what Galadriel had said, and cautioned him to beware of the Sons of Fëanor. Soon, rumors of the Kinslaying did indeed reach the ears of Thingol. The truth being known to him at last, Thingol confronted Finrod and his brothers who happened to be in Doriath at the time. Finrod protested that it was Fëanor and his followers who had been the ones mainly responsible for the evils the Noldor had done, not Finrod and his party. But he allowed Angrod to tell the whole story of what had happened in the flight from Aman. Thingol's wrath towards Finrod and Fingolfin was softened by what he heard, but he did not forgive the sons of Fëanor. In vengeance, he forbade the usage of Quenya, the language of the Noldor, within the borders of Doriath. In later years, this would lead to the rise of Sindarin over Quenya, which would become an almost dead language outside of books and the private use of the exiles.<br />
<br />
When Nargothrond was finished, a feast was held to celebrate its completion, and Galadriel came back from Doriath to celebrate. She asked Finrod why he was not married. Foresight seemed to come upon Finrod, and he said that one day he would swear Ring of Barahiroath that one day he would have fulfill no matter the consequences, and as a result no child would inherit his works.<br />

==Differences==<br />
<br />

<div>silmarillion-chapters<br />
Of Beleriand and Its Realms is the fourteenth chapter of the Quenta Silmarillion section within The Silmarillion.<br />
<br />
==Synopsis==<br />
<br />
<br />
The northwest regions of Middle-earth were known as Beleriand. This was the realm to the east of the Blue Mountains and Eriador. <br />
<br />
In the days before the awakening of the Elves, Morgoth had built the great fortress of Utumno and a secondary fortress called Angband that served as an outpost of his realm. Both of these fortresses had been destroyed by the Valar. Yet when Morgoth escaped and returned to Middle-earth, he raised anew the fortress of Angband and made it even stronger. Morgoth raised three mighty pillars of slag called Thangorodrim to cover the fortress. He also delved great tunnels and pits into the earth, where his armies would grow and great smithies would forge weapons for them.<br />
<br />
To the west of Angband was the realm of Hithlum, or Hísilóme the land of Mist in Quenya, for it was called this due to the great smoke Morgoth created when the Noldor first came to Beleriand. This was ruled by Fingolfin. His son Fingon received the rule of Dor-lómin. The region became known for its horses and cavalry.<br />
<br />
To the west of Hithulm was the land of Nevrast, ruled by the other son of Fingolfin named Turgon. This was a land circled by mountains and hills. The land itself was wet and had many marshes. Turgon's halls were in Vinyamar.<br />
<br />
To the south of Ard-galen was the highland of Dorthonion, a land of forests ruled by Angrod and Aegnor, two brothers of Finrod Felagund who served as his vassals. The tower of Minas Tirith, manned by Finrod's last brother Orodreth, was in Tol Sirion between Dorthonion and the Shadowy Mountains.<br />
<br />
Beleriand itself was a land criss-crossed by rivers such as the Narog, but the greatest river was the Sirion, which ran down the length of Beleriand and cut it into eastern and western halves. Finrod became the ruler of all Elves on the western half except for the Elves of the Falas, who were led by Círdan. But both he and Finrod were allies, and together they built havens in Brithombar and Eglarest.<br />
<br />
On the middle of Beleriand, Thingol was the mightiest Elf-lord, ruling the realm of Doriath. On his northern border was the horrible Nan Dungortheb where evil spiders dwelt. Doriath extended from Sirion in the west border to the river Aros in the south and east.<br />
<br />
Sirion was not the only great river of Berleriand. It had tributaries such as the River Narog. Where the Narog river flowed into the Ringwil was a great gorge, where Finrod Felagund founded the realm of Nargothrond. It was a hidden city, protected by both the river and the gorge. <br />
<br />
To the east of Doriath was the territory of the Sons of Fëanor in East Beleriand. This region was cut in pieces by the River Gelion and its tributaries. In the south six rivers broke off it, giving the region the name of Ossiriand, the land of seven rivers. This was the home of the Green-elves who had never left Beleriand on the Great Journey. This land would later be known as Lindon in later days.<br />
<br />
To the north of Ossirand was the lands owned by the Sons of Fëanor. Maedhros owned the northernmost territory that was closest to Angband, for it was a flat and open area that was vulnerable to attack. This would be known as the March of Maedhros. His capital was a fortress named Himring. Maglor his brother guarded the territory to the east where there was a gap in the hills.<br />
Celegorm and Curufin would be rulers of the land to the south in Aglon. Caranthir ruled the land along the river Gelion beside the Blue Mountains, and here he would have dealings with the Dwarves of Nogrod and Belegost. Finally, Amrod and Amras controlled the southernmost part of East Beleriand on the western side of Gelion.<br />

<br />
==Synopsis==<br />
The Hobbits and Aragorn make their way across the countryside and see the abandoned tower of Weathertop in the distance. Aragon informs them that they will spend the night there. On the tower, he gives them each a dagger to use and then departs to scout the area. Frodo drifts off to sleep and is awoken by the other hobbits attempting to make a meal. Frodo panics and throws sand on to the fire, extinguishing it. However, this seems to summon the Nazgȗl from below. The hobbits run to the top of the hill and pull out their knives. The Ringwraiths advance from the shadows. The others ineffectually try to defend Frodo, but he is force backwards and falls over. The Witch-king advances and stands over him. Frodo succumbs to a temptation to put on the Ring. When he does, he is shunted into the world of the Ringwraiths. The Witch-king reaches out for the Ring. Frodo starts to give it to him, but recovers his wits and pulls back. Enraged, the Witch-king stabs him with a Morgul-blade. Frodo barely manages to remove the Ring.<br />
<br />
Aragorn suddenly appears, using a torch to set the Ringwraiths on fire. The site of fire is enough to scare the Ringwraiths off, leaving him and the hobbits alone. Aragorn examines Frodo and realizes the wound is beyond his ability to heal. He gets the other hobbits to help move him. The scene cuts to them running through the woods from the Nazgȗl on the way to Rivendell.<br />
<br />
==Differences==<br />
*The Hobbits received their daggers earlier from Tom Bombadil in the Barrows. Since the Barrows do not appear in the films, an alternate explanation had to be provided. There is also no allusion to their being products of Westernesse. Where Aragorn obtained them from is not mentioned.<br />
*Aragorn tells the tale of Beren and Luthien before the Ringwraiths attack.<br />
*The Ringwraiths attack in the book even when the fire is active.<br />
*Aragorn does not use his sword.<br />

<br />
==Synopsis==<br />
The Nazgûl enter Bree, riding down the gatekeeper. They enter into the Prancing Pony, their terror overcoming Barliman Butterbur. The hobbits are shown to be sleeping as the Ringwraiths poise their blades above what seem to be the Hobbits and then stab downwards as Sam jolts awake. However, the hobbits are actually in another room entirely. The Ringwraiths have only stabbed empty beds. They yell out in anger as the other hobbits wake up. Aragorn briefly explains that the Ringwraiths were once great Men who were given rings of power. The rings converted their recipients into wraiths that are under the control of Sauron. They now exist solely to find the One Ring and will hunt Frodo as long as he bears it. Aragorn leads the Hobbits away from Bree as the sun dawns to get away from the Ringwraiths.<br />
<br />
The hobbits escape from Bree. Merry and Frodo briefly discuss Aragorn's trustworthiness. Frodo decides to trust Aragorn for the moment. The hobbits briefly stop to make a second breakfast before Aragorn reprimands them. Eventually they reach the Midgewater Marshes.<br />
<br />
==Differences==<br />
*In the books, the perpetrators of the attack at Bree are Men who work for the Nazgul rather then the Nazgul themselves. <br />
*Barliman Butterbur's role is drastically reduced. In the books, he assists the hobbits, but in the movie, he only appears once after his introduction, cowering from the Ringwraiths.<br />
*The explanation of the Ringwraiths does not come from Aragorn.<br />
*Snow is shown on the ground, but it is still the middle of October.<br />
*The second breakfast joke is original to the movies.<br />
*The dialogue regarding Aragon's appearance takes place in the inn, not in the forest,<br />

Gondor, or the South-kingdom, was one of the two Kingdoms of the Dúnedain (the other being Arnor in the north) in the lands about the Mouths of Anduin. Initially the lesser of the Realms in-Exile, Gondor survived to the end of the Third Age, unlike Arnor, and had an instrumental role in the War of the Ring.<br />
<br />
== History ==<br />
===Second Age===<br />
==== Foundation ====<br />
After the Downfall of Númenor, the Exiles of Númenor, led by Elendil, established the Realms in Exile of Arnor and Gondor. Arriving at the Mouths of Anduin, Elendil's sons, Isildur and Anárion, ascended the great river and founded the realm of Gondor. <br />
<br />
In Númenorean colonies and outposts, such as Belfalas and Pelargir, there were many Faithful, fully or partially of Númenórean blood, who descended from Númenor long before its Downfall. <br />

<br />
At this early point in its history, Gondor was the lesser of the Kingdoms of the Dúnedain, with their conjoint Kings subject to the High King who ruled Arnor in the North. After their arrival and acceptance by the people, Isildur and Anárion put themselves to the task of ordering their realm. Isildur took the area then known as Arnen (later Ithilien) and built the tower of Minas Ithil near Mordor as a threat to the Black Land, and within its walls he planted a seedling of the White Tree of Númenor that he had taken before its burning. Anárion raised the tower of Minas Anor on the other side of Anduin's floodplain as a bulwark against the Wild Men. In between their cities, the brothers founded Osgiliath, their capital, from which they jointly reigned; these three cities also housed three of the palantíri, the Seeing Stones that the Faithful had taken with them from Númenor, to maintain contact with Elendil and the other areas under their control.<br />
<br />
Extraordinary knowledge of stonework was brought to the South-kingdom from Númenor, and this skill was a vital part of the character of Gondor and its people. In the early years of the realm, the Gondorians worked to erect mighty cities and monuments throughout their new land. Their original capital at Osgiliath had great stone bridges spanned the Anduin, as well as mighty houses and towers of stone. Other works marvellous and strong they built in the land in the days of their power, at the Argonath, and at Aglarond, and at Erech; and at Isengard, they made the Pinnacle of Orthanc of unbreakable stone. Great roads that ran both north and south of the White Mountains traversed through the realm.<br />
<br />
Gondor was, from the beginnning of its history, always more powerful and populous than its northern counterpart, the Arnor, in spite of its borders being impeded in the South and East.<br />
<br />
==== War of the Last Alliance ====<br />
War of the Last Alliance<br />
Gondor was at first unaware that Sauron, who had been taken as a prisoner to Númenor before its destruction, had survived the disastrous Downfall. However, not long after the kingdom's cities were built, the awakening of the fires of Orodruin signalled his return. At that time, the Men of Gondor first called the mountain Amon Amarth, or Mount Doom.<br />
<br />
Soon after, in 3429, Sauron launched an attack on Minas Ithil, which forced Isildur into a retreat. Sauron took the fortress and burned the White Tree of Gondor that had grown there, but Isildur saved one of its seedlings and took it and his family on a ship down the Anduin. He sailed to the north to confer with Elendil about these events while Anárion remained in Gondor and continued to hold Minas Anor and Osgiliath. He also managed to push back Sauron's forces to the mountain range of Ephel Dúath, but Sauron began to gather reinforcements and the Men of Gondor knew that their realm was in great danger of being destroyed unless aid came.<br />
<br />
Elendil reacted to the threat of Sauron by combining forces with Gil-galad, the High King of the Noldor, to make the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Their armies marched south-east from Arnor and Lindon. Supported by the forces of Gondor, Lórinand, the Woodland Realm, and Khazad-dûm, the Alliance fought a great battle on the plain of Dagorlad, north of Mordor. The Last Alliance was victorious, and entered Mordor itself, where they laid a siege on Sauron's Tower of Barad-dûr for seven years. During this time, Anárion, joint King of Gondor, was killed by a rock thrown from Barad-dûr that broke his helm. The siege ended when Sauron himself emerged from Barad-dûr to fight the Alliance. Gil-galad and Elendil were slain in single combat, but Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron's finger ending the war.<br />
<br />
=== Third Age ===<br />
====Independence====<br />
After the battle, Isildur, former joint King of Gondor and heir to the High Kingship, built a secret tomb for Elendil on the mountain Amon Anwar and placed the rule of Gondor in the hands of his brother's eldest eligible son, Meneldil. Isildur planted the seedling of the White Tree that he had saved in Minas Ithil, and brought to Minas Anor, and it endured for several centuries. <br />
<br />
After these acts, Isildur left Gondor in 2 with the intent of taking up the High Kingship in Annúminas. He never arrived. Isildur had relinquished the rule of Gondor to his nephew Meneldil who became the first King of Gondor to rule in his own right and so, Gondor became an independent realm.<br />
<br />
==== Golden Age ====<br />
After the war, Gondor's power and wealth grew steadily (only interrupted by an Easterling invasion in 492). Its power would continue to grow into the 9th century of the Third Age. While the power of Gondor's sister kingdom Arnor peaked during the 9th century, when it broke into various successor states, Gondor's greatest glory was yet to come.<br />
<br />
Gondor's power reached its Golden Age under the four "Ship-kings": Tarannon Falastur, Eärnil I, Ciryandil, and Hyarmendacil I.<br />
<br />
Tarannon was Captain of the Hosts and the first of the Ship-kings of Gondor, who extended Gondor far along the shores west and south of the Ethir Anduin. Commemorating his victories, Tarannon assumed the name "Falastur" when he took the crown. Tarannon was also famous for his Queen, the "nefarious, solitary, and loveless" Berúthiel. Tarannon had built a house in Pelargir that rested upon arches sunk into the Anduin, but the queen refused to live within the sound and smell of the sea. She lived in the King's House in Osgiliath where she owned cats said to be able to spy upon men. Eventually Tarannon placed her upon a boat cast adrift at sea. He was then the first king to die without an heir, and was succeeded by his nephew, the second of the Ship-kings, Eärnil I.<br />
<br />
Eärnil I continued with the expansionist maritime policy of his predecessor by constructing a great navy and repairing the ancient haven of Pelargir. But Gondor was not the supreme "Lord of the Coasts" as Tarannon boasted; the Haven of Umbar stood in their way of complete domination. So in 933, Eärnil I defeated the forces of Umbar, seizing control of the seas and making Umbar a great harbour and fortress of Gondor. Even though Gondor's naval power was uncontested, Eärnil I was lost at sea and was never seen again. <br />
<br />
When he was lost at sea, he was succeeded by his son Ciryandil, who continued his father's naval policies of building more ships. Ciryandil reigned over Gondor for seventy-nine years, and died in the defence of Umbar against the Haradrim, in Haradwaith, led by the lords exiled from Umbar.<br />
<br />
When Ciryandil was slain, his son Ciryaher took up the Crown. After biding his time and building up his forces, he avenged his father, and defeated the kings of Harad, by land and by sea and made them acknowledge the overlordship of Gondor in 1050. In the reign of the powerful king Hyarmendacil I Gondor reached the height of its power. After this victory he took the name Hyarmendacil, meaning "South-victor". Hyarmendacil's reign brought Gondor to its greatest extent and power. For the rest of his one hundred and thirty-four year reign Gondor was at peace; the passes of Mordor were well guarded, and no one dared contest his power. During Hyarmendacil I's reign, Gondor's borders reached their furthest extent. The Kingdom extended east to the Sea of Rhûn; south to the Harnen and all the coast up to the cape of Umbar; as far north as Celebrant; and west towards Greyflood. Gondor would also enjoy several centuries of peace due to its military might. The Men of the Vales of Anduin as well as the Haradrim acknowledged its authority and overlordship, with the Kings of Harad paying homage. Hyarmendacil I was the last of the Ship-kings. He was succeeded by his lazy son Atanatar II Alcarin.<br />
<br />
==== Decline ====<br />
The extent and power of the realm Atanatar had inherited earned him the title Alcarin ("Glorious") but he did little to maintain its strength, and nothing to expand its influence. Already during Atanatar's reign, then, Gondor began to stagnate. There is some evidence to suggest that Gandalf first visited Gondor during this period, earning the name Incánus from the Gondorians. Atanatar II ruled Gondor for seventy-seven years, during which the wealth and power created by his father slowly began to wane. Atanatar was succeeded by his eldest son, who ruled as Narmacil I, but Narmacil had no children and was succeeded in turn by his brother, Atanatar's younger son Calmacil.<br />
<br />
After sixty-four years as Regent under the old King Calmacil, Minalcar took the throne in his own right. In memory of a great victory over the Easterlings he had won in his Regency, he became King in the name Rómendacil II. Rómendacil II built, on the northern approach to Nen Hithoel, the giant pillars Argonath to mark the northern border of Gondor following his great victory over the Easterlings in 1248. He developed less tangible defences, too, working to cement a bond between Gondor and the Northmen who lived to the east. He went so far as to send his son Valacar to live among them, an act from which the evils of the Kin-strife would eventually develop. After Rómendacil II's reign, decadence spread under the kings of Gondor and a long period of decline began (although Gondor experienced several revivals). Three great calamities struck Gondor during the second millennium of the Third Age, which are held to be the chief reasons for its decline: the Kin-strife, the Great Plague, and the invasion of the Wainriders (a tribe of Easterlings), one of series of conflicts in the War. <br />
<br />
===== Kin-strife =====<br />
Kin-strife<br />
In the 15th century a great civil war named the Kin-strife tore the nation apart. The current King Eldacar was of mixed blood: his mother was of the Northmen. Popular displeasure at this led to the overthrow of King Eldacar by Castamir, the admiral of all of Gondor's naval forces who possessed some royal blood. Eldacar's son was slain, and Eldacar fled north. Castamir was afterwards known as Castamir the Usurper. During his ten year rule he proved to be very cruel, and because of his love of his old fleet, he lavished attention on the coastal regions while the interior provinces were ignored and left to rot. Eldacar then returned with an army of his Northmen kinsmen, and they were joined by armies of Gondorians from interior provinces such as Anórien. Osgiliath was devastated during this conflict, its great bridge destroyed and its palantír lost. Eldacar slew Castamir and reclaimed his throne, but Castamir's sons and their forces were besieged in Pelargir, the great port of Gondor. They eventually retreated to Umbar, where they joined with the Corsairs, and troubled Gondor for many years, until their descendants died out.<br />
<br />
===== Great Plague =====<br />
Great Plague<br />
In Third Age 1636, the Great Plague struck and the White Tree died. This Plague was no localized event: the Plague swept through all of Middle-earth, reaching the successor states of Arnor and the Hobbits of the Shire in the North. King Tarondor found a sapling of the White Tree, and moved the capital from Osgiliath to Minas Anor, the City of Anárion. During this time, Gondor was so depopulated that the fortifications guarding against the re-entry of evil into Mordor were abandoned. It is believed that had the Haradrim or Easterlings been capable of attacking Gondor at this time, it would have fallen. However, the Plague left Gondor's enemies in no better condition than Gondor itself, and neither side was capable of mounting new offensives.<br />
<br />
===== Invasion of the Wainriders =====<br />
The first invasion of the Wainriders began 1856 during the reign of King Narmacil II, following the sapping of Gondor's strength by the plague. The spirit of Sauron in the East stirred up the forces of the Wainriders to attack the lands of Gondor and her allies. The Wainriders were stronger than any other horde of Easterlings before, and so in 1856, on the fields of Rhovanion, the Wainriders defeated the forces of Gondor and the Northmen, killing Narmacil II and enslaving Rhovanion. During the enslavement of Rhovannion, the Nazgûl entered Mordor. But the Gondorians would not sit idle, while their allies to the north were suffering under the Wainriders. In 1899 King Calimehtar led a revolt in Rhovanion, and defeated the Wainriders in the Battle of Dagorlad. <br />
<br />
1940 The King Ondoher took council with Araphant the king of Arthedain. The kings realized that one force was beset on destroying the kingdoms of the Dunedain. For a long time it had lain dormant, but in the weakness of both kingdoms, it attacked. The Kingdoms allied against the power, and Prince Arvedui of Arthedain married Firiel the daughter of Ondoher. <br />
<br />
After licking their wounds for 45 years the Wainriders returned with allies from Khand and Harad in 1944. The Wainriders came in the north from Rhovanion and the men of Harad and Khand attacked from the South. The Wainriders destroyed the Northern Army of Gondor, but in the south Gondor defeated the Southrons at the River Poros. Their Captain Eärnil gathered the remnants of the northern army, and went north to challenge the Wainriders. In the Battle of the Camp Eärnil surprised the Wainriders, while they were celebrating their victory.<br />
<br />
===== Reunification Rejected =====<br />
In 1944, Gondor also faced a constitutional crisis when King Ondoher was slain in a previous battle with both his sons. Prince Arvedui, son of King Araphant of Arthedain and Ondoher's son-in-law, and the victorious general Eärnil, who was a distant blood-relative of Ondoher, claimed the throne. Arvedui's claim lay mainly in the reintroduction of the old Númenórean law of accession, which stated the eldest (remaining) child should succeed the king. If the law was reintroduced, then Arvedui's wife Fíriel, Ondoher's daughter and last remaining child would become Ruling Queen, making their descendants Kings of both Arnor and Gondor. Arvedui also tried to put weight behind his claim as he was Isildur's heir. The Council of Gondor recognised that the name of Isildur was held in honour in Gondor, but they dictated that the South-Kingdom must be ruled by an Heir of Anárion. Due to his ancestry from Fíriel and Arvedui, more than a millennium later, Aragorn Elessar put forward his claim as the heir of both Isildur and Anárion.<br />
<br />
Eärnil lay his claim as being a direct descendant of King Telumehtar Umbardacil. His claim was also greatly bolstered by the popularity he had gained as the victorious general who saved Gondor from the Wainriders after winning the southern theatre of the war. Steward Pelendur who was temporarily ruling Gondor as serving as arbiter of succession, intervened in favour of Gondor's victorious general who would rule as Eärnil II.<br />
<br />
===== Last Heir of Anárion =====<br />
During the Battle of Fornost, Eärnil II's heir Eärnur led Gondor's forces to victory over the Witch-king of Angmar, who was actually the Lord of the Nazgûl. Although Eärnur wished to fight him, Eärnur's horse was terrified and fled the battle against his wishes. By the time he mastered his horse and return, the Witch-king had fled. Glorfindel the Elf then prophesied to him that it was better that he not fight the Lord of the Nazgûl because "never by the hand of man shall he fall". <br />
<br />
Eärnur later ascended to the throne, ruling from Minas Anor (Tower of the Sun). During this time, the Ringwraiths captured Minas Anor's sister city, Minas Ithil (Tower of the Moon), causing it to be renamed Minas Morgul (Tower of Sorcery), and took it as their lair. Minas Anor was renamed Minas Tirith (Tower of Guard) as a result. The Lord of the Nazgûl repeatedly sent messengers to Minas Tirith challenging Eärnur to single combat, taunting him that he had fled out of cowardice from facing him during the Battle of Fornost. Eventually, King Eärnur was overcome by wrath and rode with a small company of knights to Minas Morgul, to accept the challenge. They were never heard from again. So ended the Line of Anárion.<br />
<br />
==== Ruling Stewards of Gondor ====<br />
Ruling Stewards<br />
The realm was governed by a long line of hereditary Stewards after the disappearance of Eärnur, son of Eärnil, since there was no proof that the last king was dead, and no claimant had enough support to be accepted as his successor. The line of Anárion was held to have failed, and Gondor was not willing to risk to another Kin-strife, which would surely have destroyed it. Whenever there was a new Steward, he would swear an oath to yield rule of Gondor back to the King, in essence only an heir of Isildur, if he should ever return. In Gondor there was no one who could claim descent from Isildur in direct line, and the northern line of Arnor had effectively disappeared, so this oath was not considered seriously. The line of Stewards ruled as Kings, without having the title.<br />
<br />
===== Cirion and Eorl =====<br />
<br />
In Third Age 2510, when Steward Cirion ruled over Gondor, the nation faced one of its greatest perils: an Easterling tribe named the Balchoth invaded Gondor with massive force. Gondor's army marched to fight the Balchoth but were cut off from Minas Tirith and pushed back in the direction of the Limlight.<br />
<br />
Messengers were sent to get help from the Éothéod, a tribe which lived in the northern vales of the Anduin, but nobody expected the messengers to reach their destination. When certain peril came upon Gondor, however, the Éothéod turned the tide of the Battle of the Field of Celebrant. After the victory the Éothéod were awarded the fields of Calenardhon north of the Ered Nimrais from the Gap of Rohan at the southern end of the Hithaeglir, Fangorn Forest, rivers Limlight to river Anduin, western Emyn Muil and the Mering Stream, where they established the kingdom of Rohan with Eorl the Young as their first king. A perpetual alliance between Gondor and Rohan was established by the oath Eorl swore to Cirion.<br />
<br />
In 2710 King Déor asked the help of Steward Egalmoth to drive off the Dunlendings from the occupied Ring of Isengard, but a renewed war against the Orcs prevented the Steward from fulfilling the Oath.<br />
<br />
Southern Gondor was assailed by three great fleets from Umbar and Harad and Steward Beren spent much of his rule fighting the Corsairs of Umbar. In the meantime, during the Long Winter of 2758 - 2759, Rohan came under attack from the Dunlendings, so neither nation could help the other, until captain Beregond, Beren's son, repeled the invaders. Therefore when Saruman suddenly appeared and requested leave to dwell in Isengard, Beren gladly gave the Wizard the key of Orthanc. By the time of Beregond, Gondor started recovering its strength.<br />
<br />
Upon the death of Belecthor, the White Tree of Gondor also died, but was left standing "until the King comes".<br />
<br />
In 2885, when Ithilien was invaded in great strength, King Folcwine of Rohan fulfilled the Oath and sent many men to Gondor. With their aid Steward Túrin II won a victory at the Crossings of Poros. Since then, Gondor withdrew from Ithilien and only the Rangers of Ithilien remained with special refuges for them, and a fortification on Cair Andros.<br />
<br />
It was near the end of Turgon's rule, in 2951, when Sauron declared himself openly in Mordor; he gathered his power there, and began rebuilding Barad-dûr. Ecthelion II strengthened Pelargir and refortified Cair Andros. Under his service, the stranger Thorongil, severely damaged the Corsairs' fleet at Umbar in a surprise attack.<br />
<br />
===== War of the Ring=====<br />
War of the Ring<br />
<br />
In 3019, during the War of the Ring, Gondor was the strongest of the free nations that opposed Sauron, and thus, its defeat was his primary strategic goal in the war. Gondor faced an all out attack on its capital Minas Tirith in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Although nearly defeated, the Rohirrim once again turned the tide of battle, and helped win the war, though with heavy losses. The combined army of the West then carried the battle to Sauron at the Battle of the Morannon, a feint to distract Sauron's attention from Frodo Baggins's quest to destroy the One Ring in Mount Doom, thus causing Sauron's destruction and the allies' ultimate victory.<br />
<br />
===Later history===<br />

After the second and final defeat of Sauron, the Kingship of Gondor was restored, Aragorn II became the third King of Gondor and Arnor. <br />
<br />
During his reign, Aragorn restored Gondor and repeopled it, but retained Minas Tirith as the chief city.. Gondor was divided into regions described as 'fiefs', each under the control of a lord who in turn owed their allegiance to the Ruler of Gondor, whether the King or (in later years) the Ruling Steward. Many of these fiefs were dominated by the Dúnedain, notably the royal lands of Anórien and Ithilien, as well as the shoreland fief of Belfalas.<br />
<br />
The Númenórean King of Gondor governed the realm with the frame of ancient law, of which he was administrator (and interpreter) but not the maker. In all debatable matters of importance domestic, or external, however, even Denethor had a Council, and at least listened to what the Lords of the Fiefs and the Captains of the Forces had to say. Aragorn re-established the Great Council of Gondor, and in that Faramir, who remained by inheritance the Steward (or representative of the King during his absence abroad, or sickness, or between his death and the accession of his heir) was his chief counsellor.<br />
<br />
==Geography==<br />
At its greatest extent, the realm extended:<br />
<br />
* North to the Field of Celebrant and the southern eaves of Mirkwood<br />
* West to the Greyflood<br />
* East to the inland Sea of Rhûn<br />
* South to the River Harnen, and also along the coast to the peninsula and haven of Umbar<br />
<br />
A large part of the northern territories was gifted to the Éothéod in 2510. Gondor's close proximity to Sauron's land was the catalyst of many battles and skirmishes, but its location also gave the Gondorians more ability to protect the other regions of Middle-earth from the Dark Lord and his servants.<br />
<br />
At the height of its power, between the reigns of Hyarmendacil I and Rómendacil II (1015-1366), the wide lands between Anduin and the Sea of Rhûn were never effectively settled or occupied, and the only true north boundary of the Kingdom east of Anduin was formed by the Emyn Muil and the marshes south and east of them. Númenorean influence, however, went far beyond even these extended bounds, passing up the Vales of Anduin to its sources, and reaching the lands east of Mirkwood, between the River Running and the River Carnen.<br />
<br />
===Regions===<br />
Gondor was divided between several nearly autonomous regions. These were the following:<br />
<br />
* Andrast, the de-populated peninsula of Ras Morthil<br />
* Anfalas, or the Langstrand, in the south-west<br />
* Anórien, surrounding Minas Tirith and north of Ered Nimrais<br />
* Belfalas, the peninsula jutting out from the southern coast of Gondor ruled by the Prince of Dol Amroth<br />
* Ethir Anduin, the estuary of the River Anduin<br />
* Ithilien, the lands across the Anduin from Minas Tirith<br />
* Lamedon, north of the Ringló<br />
* Lebennin, the land between Lossarnach and the Bay of Belfalas <br />
* Lossarnach, in the mountain vales south-west of Minas Tirith <br />
* Morthond, south of Erech<br />
* Pinnath Gelin, the hills north of Anfalas and east of the river Lefnui<br />
* Ringló Vale, between Lamedon and Belfalas<br />
<br />
Additionally, Gondor held or had held the following regions at certain points in its history:<br />
* South Gondor, which was contested between Gondor and the forces of Harad and Umbar<br />
* Calenardhon, which was given to the Éothéod and became Rohan<br />
* Enedwaith, the timberlands of Gondor (shared with Arnor), which were never really populated and soon abandoned<br />
* Rhovanion, which was never fully under the control of Gondor but under Gondorian influence at certain times during the Third Age<br />
* Haradwaith, tributary of Gondor for a while<br />
<br />
===Cities===<br />
Cities in Gondor included:<br />
* Calembel<br />
* Dol Amroth, the seat of Princes on the coasts of Gondor<br />
* Linhir<br />
* Minas Tirith (originally named Minas Anor), the seven-tiered citadel of the Kings of Gondor<br />
* Minas Ithil, conquered by the Ringwraiths and renamed Minas Morgul by the Gondorians<br />
* Osgiliath, the ancient capital of Gondor<br />
* Pelargir, the greatest and most ancient of the havens of Gondor<br />
* Tarnost (debatable)<br />
<br />
===Fortresses and outposts===<br />
Additionally, Gondor used the following locations as military strongholds at certain points in its history, many of which Mordor later took:<br />
* The outposts of Amon Hen and Amon Lhaw on Emyn Muil probably had small garrisons<br />
* Angrenost, the fortress of Isengard, later granted to Saruman<br />
* The Gondorian fortress later known as Hornburg, guarding the Helm's Deep<br />
* The Towers of the Teeth, built by the Gondorians to keep watch over Mordor.<br />
* The fortress guarding the pass of Cirith Ungol<br />
* The castle that came to be called Durthang, the largest fortress in Mordor, originally built to guard the Ephel Dúath<br />
* Tharbad to the north, held by both Gondor and Arnor but abandoned and later ruined after Gondor retreated from Enedwaith<br />
* Umbar, which was contested between Gondor and the forces of Harad and Umbar<br />
<br />
==Languages==<br />
Westron, or the Common Speech, was the main language of the people of Gondor. An antique, more formal and terse, form of the Common Tongue was spoken by the Gondorians. <br />
<br />
Many of the Men of Gondor could also speak the Elvish tongues, a notable distinction and characteristic among the Dúnedain of the South. Sindarin had long ceased to be a "first language" in Gondor, but was learned in early youth (by those claiming Númenórean descent) from loremasters, and used by them as a mark of rank and high-blood. It had changed very little since the Downfall of Númenor and though the Men of Gondor altered some of the sounds, they could still understand the Elves and be understood by them. Westron became used more and more by the Dúnedain of Gondor themselves, so that at the time of the War of the Ring, Sindarin was known to only a small part of the peoples of Gondor (and spoken daily by fewer); they dwelt mostly in Minas Tirith and the adjacent townlands, and in the land of the tributary princes of Dol Amroth. Sindarin was used to be polite, especially in Minas Tirith.<br />
<br />
Quenya was known to the learned of Gondor, a tradition which has continued from the loremasters of Númenor, to be used for places of fame and reverence in addition to the names of royalty and men of great renown. All the royal names of the Kings of Gondor as well as all the Stewards until Mardil Voronwë were Quenya names. At the end of the Third Age, there were more Gondorians (those of Minas Tirith and its fiefs) that knew Quenya or spoke Sindarin than there were Elves (those of Lindon, Rivendell, and Lórien) who did either. <br />
<br />
==Etymology==<br />
Gondor.mp3<br />
In earlier times, it was called the South Kingdom, or Hyaralondie, Hyallondie and Turmen Hyallondiéva in Quenya, and Arthor na Challonnas in Sindarin from the Númenórean point of view: the elements londie and lonnas mean "harbour, landing".<br />
<br />
The name Gondor was likely adopted from the lesser people's terminology and translates from Sindarin as "Stone-land", from the words gond, "stone", and (n)dor, "land". The (generally not used) Quenya form of the name was Ondonóre. Gondor received its name because of the abundance of stone in the Ered Nimrais, and the usage of it in great stone cities, statues, and monuments, such as Minas Tirith and the Argonath. <br />
<br />
In Rohan, it was known as Stoningland (a modernization of Old English Stāning-(land)), and Ghân-buri-Ghân of the Drúedain also recognized their use of stone.<br />
<br />
==Inspiration==<br />
The history and civilization of Gondor has been compared to historical elements of the real world. Many real-world civilizations experienced periods in which a regent, vizier, or or general held actual power in the name a rightful monarch, like the Ruling Stewards did in Gondor. In his letters Tolkien compared the Ruling Stewards of Gondor to the Carolingians of France--Charlemagne's line descended from a marshal in service to the Merovingian dynasty that eventually replaced them.<br />
===Italy===<br />
Writing in a letter about an impending trip in 1955, Tolkien identified Gondor as Italy.<br />
===Egypt===<br />
Tolkien himself likened Gondor in a degree to ancient Egypt, in terms of how Gondorians constructed gigantic stone structures, and the Crown of Gondor being similar to the crown of the Pharaohs of Egypt. Notably, some "scholars" claimed that ancient Egypt was a colony of Atlantis, much like how Gondor was a survival of Númenor (although it is unknown if Tolkien considered this aspect).<br />
===Byzantine Empire===<br />
In online discussions, many Tolkien fans have entertained the idea that Gondor is comparable to the Byzantine Empire. J.R.R. Tolkien described Minas Tirith in a long letter to Milton Waldman, that was probably written in late 1951, as the "half-ruinous Byzantine City of Minas Tirith" and that of Gondor in its history "fades slowly to decayed Middle-Age, a kind of proud, venerable, but increasingly impotent Byzantium". Some of the parallels noted between Gondor and the Byzantine Empire are:<br />
<br />
Gondor is the south-eastern portion of Elendil's original kingdom. The Byzantine Empire was the eastern remnant of the Roman Empire. The Western Roman Empire eventually withered and dissolved, like Arnor, while the Byzantine Empire endured, although in a dramatically weakened state. Both states acted as a cultural and military buffer between two cultures: Byzantium between Europe and Islam, Gondor between the northern polities and Mordor. The Byzantine Empire absorbed several "barbaric" peoples like the Wends and Slavs, much like Gondor did with the Northmen and other Middle Men. Unlike Byzantium, Gondor did not fall and was restored through the return of its rightful line of kings. Constantinople and Minas Tirith also play similar roles as the respective largest cities in their respective cultural spheres.<br />
<br />
As a final note, the last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI, remained in legend and folklore as the "Marble Emperor" whose messianic ressurection and return would signal the restoration of the Empire. This parallels the fate of Earnur and Gondor's interregnum period until the "Return of the King" who restored the Kingdom.<br />

== Downs of Rohan and Éomer aiding King Aragorn in the South ==<br />
I appreciate your interest in Tolkien Gateway and and your ambition to improve the articles on Tolkien Gateway. Why did you only add a fact template after the Downs in the Rohan article? I have access to an e-book of The Lord of the Rings and it was very easy to find the downs (of Rohan) in the index and to find all instances where the words downs is used in the chapters of The Two Towers. Why did you write "such as the Haradrim" in case of the enemies? The entry about King Éomer Appendix B II The House of Eorl - The Kings of the Mark - The Third Line only mentions that the King of the West had many enemies to subdue and that the thunder of the cavalry of the Mark was heard on the far fields of the South. It does not mention where in the south and against which ethnic group the cavarly of Rohan fought and if this ethnic group were Haradrim. There could be other ethnic groups in the south, such as Black Númenoreans (e.g. the Mouth of Sauron at the end of the War of the Ring) or Dúnedain (i.e. former Gondorian rebels from the Kin-strife, Westron was spoken in Umbar and along the coast according to the appendix on Languages at the End of the Third Age) in the south. It is a speculation that King Éomer fought against Haradrim in the Fourth Age. In my opinion, speculations should always be phrased in a way that makes it clear that they are only a speculation and that discloses on which references the speculation is based. --Akhorahil 09:31, 14 June 2021 (UTC)<br />
<br />
<br />
Admittidely I was wrong about the Haradrim. However, the downs in the article are redlinked, which makes it looks like, (at least in my mind), they are referring to a specific place in Rohan called "The Downs" (like the Barrow-downs). I am unaware of a place in Rohan specifically called that, and even when I looked in the Two Towers I only see refernces to them as a terrain feature and not a landmark a region is named for.Turiannerevarine 12:13, 14 June 2021 (UTC)<br />
<br />
:No problem. You are right that the downs are merely a terrain feature that is mentioned in the narrative and in the Index, but they are not mentioned as the Downs with a capital "D" and are not drawn at all on the Map of Rohan, Gondor and Mordor and not drawn on the General Map of Middle-earth. However they are in one of J.R.R. Tolkien's maps in the website of the Tolkien Estate. They are not the name of a region, but they and the East Wall of Rohan, which is mentioned in the narrative and which has its own article on Tolkien Gateway could be mentioned as part of the geography of Rohan. One could make a short page about the downs of Rohan with their approximate position and the action taking place there --Akhorahil 15:39, 14 June 2021 (UTC)<br />
<br />
::Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I might try my hand at making such an article soon. I'll try to be more careful about speculation and such things in the future. Turiannerevarine 18:45, 14 June 2021 (UTC)<br />

== Edits to Breelanders page without references ==<br />
I noticed that you added a lot of information to the Breelanders page without providing any references that support this information and that you indicated that you intend to "add better refs later" in the summary box of your edit. I noticed that you edited other pages later on that day and created a forum entry today without first providing the references for your statements on the Breelanders page. The standards of Tolkien Gateway require references and it is a good practice to have the books or e-books open and reading them when making edits to be sure that the information is supported by the contents of the books and to be able to insert the references. One's memory of what is written in the books may be mistaken. Please add references and remove any incorrect information on the Breelanders page. --Akhorahil 07:59, 5 August 2021 (UTC)<br />

<br />
Thanks so much for helping with the film scenes! Great to have you back. Just curious, I noticed in today's edits there is a screenshot of the One Ring falling onto Frodo's finger, but I don't read about that in the description of the scene. Is the screenshot from this particular scene, and if so, maybe we can mention it in the article? Thanks! --Hyarion (talk) 21:17, 29 August 2022 (UTC)<br />

==Differences==<br />
