I revised this on the Thranduil page, and it looks like this is the content blurb that Sage must have moved over two years ago. I would like to correct it, but then I'm concerned it will sound just like the Thranduil page. Since it came from that page, is that okay? I mean it's pretty much the Third Age, Battle of Five Armies, and War of the Ring section in one blurb. Perhaps with a slightly less Thranduil-centric slant it will still apply just fine.
