Tar-Anárion was the eighth ruler of Númenor,[1] succeeding his mother, Tar-Ancalimë (being the first ruling Queen)[2].
History[edit | edit source]
Little is said about Tar-Anárion's rule.[1] His two eldest children were female, but both refused to be heirs to the throne for unknown reasons, and they disliked and feared Ancalimë, who would in revenge not allow them to marry. Therefore he was succeeded by his son, Tar-Súrion.[4]
Etymology[edit | edit source]
Anárion is a Quenya name. Its meaning is not glossed, but Paul Strack suggests it likely means "Son of the Sun" as a compound of anar ("sun") and the patronymic suffix -ion ("son of").[5] Like all the rulers of Númenor who took their royal names in Quenya, Anárion added the prefix tar- ("high") to his name when he received the Sceptre.[6]
