The Midgewater Marshes is the seventeenth scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition). This scene does not appear in the theatrical cut of the film.

Synopsis

The group arrives in Midgewater, which is hard to traverse owing to the swampy conditions and presence of bugs. They eventually make it through the marshes in time for sundown. Frodo overhears Aragorn singing the Lay of Leithian, which describes the love between the Man Beren and the Elf Lúthien and their tragic end.

Differences

  • The Lay of Leithian is sung at Weathertop in the book, not near Midgewater.
