Welcome to Tolkien Gateway's Community Portal a one-stop shop for editors old and new Tolkien Gateway is an encyclopedia about Tolkien that anyone can edit. Since our launch on 3 June 2005, we have grown to include 12,485 articles and 13,913 images on a range of Tolkien-related topics. This Community Portal is designed to help editors find something to work on. It covers a range of ways you can share your Tolkien knowledge with the world including creating wanted pages, expanding stub articles, cleaning up poorly-written pages and added references to articles in need of citations. Some of the work might be a little tedious, but a little goes a long way in continuing to build the world's largest Tolkien encyclopedia. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in our Chat. You can also ask a specific staff member on their talk page - they're happy to help you out.

Site updates 24-6-23 - We have configured a Maps extension into TG so we can now incorporate both real-world as well as legendarium-based maps into articles. 19-6-23 - Hovering over a reference number in an article will now display a preview of the citation. 1-6-23 - Talk pages have been modernized to support a much more friendly interface both for new topics and replies. You will also now receive a notification if someone replies to your comment. 28-5-23 - You can now Thank individuals for their edit, the thank button is visible on the History tab of the respective article to the far right of their edit. A log of all "Thanks" events can be accessed via Special:Log/thanks 24-5-23 - When hovering over links on a computer, a thumbnail image and brief description will now appear without having to click on the link. 24-5-23 - Enabled wiki-syntax highlighting that can be toggled using the highlighter button in the edit toolbar. 21-5-23 - Our "favicon" in web browsers was updated from the white tree to our red wax stamp. 12-5-23 - Upgraded to MediaWiki version 1.39, which includes support for the Visual Editor. more updates and Technical To-do

Uploading images When uploading an image be sure to use the appropriate copyright template by selecting it from the "Licensing" drop-down box. All you need do is provide a summary of the image and the category. Remember: do not upload images to Tolkien Gateway without prior permission of the copyright-holder unless you believe it falls under fair-use.
