Other versions of the legendarium
At first the Fellowship was to depart on 24 November but later Tolkien changed the date.[1]:xlv
Inspiration
Tolkien noted in Nomenclature that the date the Fellowship departed from Rivendell was purposefully chosen.
However, he mentioned later to Henry Resnick that it was an "unimportant date" that "occurred strictly on accident" but he let it "to show that this was not a christian myth anyhow".[2]
