On 3 January 1913, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter to Edith Bratt.[1]
- Subject: Tolkien, who commenced the letter at midnight,[note 1] declares that his love for Edith has not changed in the last three years since they were separated and that he is willing to marry her.
