Talk:Battle of the Morannon

From Tolkien Gateway

I was reading about this battle earlier in the RotK, and Gandalf seemed to elud that the Battle of the Morannon was actually bigger than the Pelennor. So I'm just wondering if this should be edited? --Dwarf Lord 00:06, 21 October 2006 (CDT)

Hm, I can't remember off the top of my head, do you have an exact quote? I'll do some digging. --Hyarion 00:09, 21 October 2006 (CDT)

It's in the chapter The Last Debate, on page 860, in the second paragraph, and on the fourth sub-paragraph in the first sentance. --Dwarf Lord 11:10, 21 October 2006 (CDT)

Hehe, I seem to possess the same edition as DL has! I found it right there where he said it would be. Gandalf speaking: "Hardly has our strength sufficed to beat off the first great assault. The next will be greater." --Earendilyon 15:59, 21 October 2006 (CDT)

So guys, what should I do with this info? --Dwarf Lord 11:07, 22 October 2006 (CDT)

You might add a comment along the lines of Though the Battle of the Pelennor Fields receives more attention in the book, the Battle of the Morannon was actually greater: [Gandalf's quote].
PS: you also might want to change the introduction of the article on the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in this respect. --Earendilyon 13:14, 22 October 2006 (CDT)
But remember that Gandalf isn't speaking of the Battle of the Morannon. He is speaking of Sauron's next attack on Gondor. Remember that this battle was where the Hosts of the West attacked the Black Gate. The quote really doesn't refer to this at all. In fact, the plan hasn't even been proposed. Gandalf was saying that ultimately there could be no victory - certainly not in a military sense - other than the One Ring. The assault never came. This may deserve a remark in, for instance The Last Debate, but the only reason to have that quote in this article is to remark on that this battle may have been their only hope of ultimate victory. --Narfil Palùrfalas 13:35, 22 October 2006 (CDT)

You're probably right, Narfil. I was reading appendix A earlier, and it said something about Pelennor Fields being the largest battle of the TA, so I agree with you. --Dwarf Lord 14:13, 22 October 2006 (CDT)
