Summary
As the Fellowship spends a night in Moria, in response to Sam's doubtful remark: "What did they do it all for? They didn't live in these darksome holes surely?" Gimli starts to sing this song. And the song itself is one of my favourites in The Lord of the Rings. Perhaps inspired by Sam's own reaction ("I should like to learn it"), I memorised the poem and wanted to make an illustration of it for a long time.
