Etymology

Temporarily moved statement from Boromir#Etymology:

The first element represents the stem BOR, Q. voro-, S. boro-, bro- meaning "ever, lasting, steady"; the ending -mir is an element meaning "jewel" in both languages, thus meaning "lasting jewel". The proper Sindarin form would perhaps be *Borovír with lenition.

Note that in the Appendix F Boromir is mentioned outside the names "remembered in the songs and histories of the First Age (as Beren, Húrin)" suggesting that Boromir was not named after the Boromir of Ladros. In the Etymologies Boromir is said to derive from Old Noldorin Boronmíro, being also a name originating from the Gnomes. --Morgan 15:45, 8 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Move?

Just by looking at the House of Beor category, this one's an odd one out. Wouldn't this be better at "Boromor (son of Boron)"? For that matter, how should we disambiguate people - by title, or by parentage, if known? --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:41, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm not entirely sure. Perhaps this is one for a meeting?-- KingAragorn  talk  contribs  edits  email  23:13, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The standard is usually "Person (Position)" and then if they don't have a position "Person (relation to another person)". If you look at Category:House of Elros or Category:Gondorians you can see this in operation. I don't think the principle is so much "You must go for parentage", but the principle is - in my opinion - "When disambiguating, use the most recognisable description to define the character."; in the cases of rulers it tends to be that they were a ruler and for others it tends to be the relationship to their parents. I think this is the sensible approach which is why we have:
Now, it may be in this case that I've got this one wrong - and I do remember wrangling over it - and that "Boromir (son of Boron)", "Boromir (Head of the House of Bëor)", "Boromir (House of Bëor)" or "Boromir (First Age man)" may be better ways of identifying him; I stuck with "Boromir (Lord of Ladros)" on the basis that the article was "Boromir of Ladros" and so there was a reasonable precedent there. Wikipedia goes with "Boromir (House of Bëor)"; EOA goes with "Boromir of Ladros", The Thain's Book went with "Boromir (Lord of the House of Beor)" and One Wiki went with "Boromir (House of Bëor)" (presumably copying Wikipedia). There isn't really a consensus on this one. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 11:57, 30 June 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Bregor as first lord emendation question

I'm having difficulty interpreting something in War of the Jewels, specifically CT's commentary on chapter 14 ("Of the Coming of Men into the West") regarding Bregor being made lord.

On §31 is the following:

Now Hador Glorindol, son of Hathol, son of Magor, son of Malach Aradan entered the household of Fingolfin in youth, and was loved by the king. Fingolfin therefore gave to him the lordship of Dor-lómin, and into that land he gathered most of the people of his kin and became the mightiest of the chieftains of the Edain. In his house only the elven-tongue was spoken, though their own speech was not forgotten by his people. But in Dorthonion the lordship of the people of Bëor and the country of Ladros was given to Boromir, son of Boron who was the grandson of Bëor the Old.

However, in the Commentary note for §31, we have the following:

In the newly devised history...

The concluding sentence of the paragraph as typed read: But in Dorthonion the lordship of the people of Bëor was given to Bregor son of Boromir ...

What does CT mean by "as typed"? I'd understand if it were an emendation made by pencil, but I don't get how both the "Boromir version" and the "Bregor version" can both be typed. Is it a difference between the LQ1 typescript, LQ2 typescript, and the chapter typescript? Oberiko (talk) 15:12, 5 August 2025 (UTC)Reply[reply]
