The inscribed copy of the Japanese Hobbit.

On 14 December 1966, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter to Father Hugh Maycock.[1]

  • Description: In an inscribed a copy of the Japanese Hobbit ("With best wishes | to Fr Hugh Maycock | and Pusey House | Dec. 14. 1966"[note 1]), Tolkien loosely inserted a brief note to Maycock, apologising for the delay "in performing my promise" and now sending "a copy of the Japanese 'Hobbit' with best wishes including Christmas blessings".[2]

Notes

  1. Rev. Francis Hugh Maycock (1903-1980) was Principal at Pusey House from 1952 until 1970.
