Summary

"Durin I, the Deathless", by Artigas

Durin I the Deathless, the eldest and mightiest of the Dwarven kings, stands unmatched in the annals of Middle-earth. His name, whispered in reverence and awe, needs no lengthy recounting, for he is the father of his people, the first of the Longbeards, and the ancestor of nearly all Dwarves whose deeds grace the histories. A figure almost shrouded in legend, Durin is remembered by his folk with titles both grand and affectionate: The Grandfather of all Mountains, a name that speaks to his enduring stature and the reverence in which he is held.

Behold him here in the zenith of his power, seated in majesty amid the splendor of Khazad-dûm, the Dwarrowdelf. A great hall stretches behind him, its arches vast but but a fragment of the boundless wonders of his kingdom. The golden light of forge and feast glimmers faintly beyond, hinting at the unceasing labor and revelry that mark the flourishing of Durin's realm. He stands before a guest of renown, receiving them with all the dignity and generosity befitting a king whose dominion is both mighty and just.

Clad in robes of brown fur and adorned with heavy garments wrought by master hands, Durin's presence is one of unshakable authority. The folds of his robes, layered and rich, fall about him like the crags of an ancient peak, while atop his brow rests the jagged crown, a creation as much a part of his being as the mountains themselves. His face, broad and solemn, is veiled by the shadow of heavy brows, a gaze imbued with the weight of years and the unbending resolve of his people. This visage speaks of the strength, weariness, and profound responsibility borne by the first father of the Longbeards.

The beard of Durin, as grand and storied as the peaks of Zirakzigil, flows like a cascade down his chest, each strand a testament to Dwarven pride and craft. Braided with intricate skill and bound into a mighty belt of great luxury, it is a wonder unto itself, a symbol of wisdom, dignity, and the unbroken traditions of his kin. This beard, as is the manner of the Longbeards, is a triumph of both form and function—folded and woven to ensure its splendor does not hinder its bearer, yet remaining as magnificent in appearance as the mountains Durin’s people call home. Even so, what is seen is but a glimpse, the tip of the iceberg, of its true length and grandeur. This, too, would be mirrored by his descendants, even the women of his line, for in the Longbeards, the beard is more than adornment; it is the banner of their unyielding pride and strength.

His regalia is rich with Dwarven symbolism, each detail wrought with care. The diamond patterns of his garments and armor evoke the stars above and the peaks below, eternal and steadfast, while the very cut of his bracers speaks of the might of stone and the craftsmanship of his kin. Durin bears his great axe, a weapon not merely of war but a symbol of his right to rule, a lord who carves his place not only in stone but in the hearts of his people.

He is a monarch of monolithic bearing, a dwarf-mountain made flesh. The mighty halls of Khazad-dûm reflect his spirit, for he is the soul of his people, the cornerstone of their greatness. Like the snows of Zirakzigil or the deep roots of Barazinbar, he is unchanging, enduring, and eternal. Durin I the Deathless: a name sung through ages, a king whose glory echoes in the stone.
