Summary

Description

For then next week of Amon Hen Art Challenge "Flora & Fauna" I drew elanor, the beautiful flower growing in Lothlórien, after which Sam Gamgee named his firstborn daughter.

In The Lord of the Rings, elanor is desribed as "small golden flowers shaped like stars" and I also generally thought of elanor as a golden flower, as contrasted with the white niphredil, but Tolkien gave a more detailed description in Letter 312, interestingly mentioning silver flowers of elanor as well:

"a pimpernel (perhaps a little enlarged) growing sun-golden flowers and star-silver ones on the same plant, and sometimes the two combined."

Last week, when I was drawing this picture, I was away from home on a holiday, so I couldn't consult the ultimate source on all things related to the plants in Tolkien's Legendarium, the book Flora of Middle-earth, at the time. But I read the chapter about elanor now and there is much more interesting information about it based on Tolkien's quotes.
