I am comparing maps and have a question about this one, and what Hammond & Scull say about it in the Reader's Companion. In RC, they write: 'Hithaeglir', the Sindarin name of the Misty Mountains, appears on the 1954 map as 'Hithaeglin'.
But if I enlarge the map shown here, it seems clear that the label to which they refer is spelled 'Hithaiglin', with an "a-i" combination rather than the "a-e." Am I wrong? Does anyone actually have an original they can double-check? —Unsigned comment by Ed8r (talk • contribs).
- Hithaeglir is the correct form. From VT42:28: "The map of Middle-earth actually read Hithaiglin, prior to Christopher Tolkien's correction of the name to Hithaeglir when he redrew the map for Unfinished Tales. On the variation Aiglos vs. Aeglos (of the name of the spear of Gil-galad, LR:237), Christopher Tolkien notes that he substituted the latter for the former in Of the Rings of Power (S:294)." I'm afraid we don't have the authority to fix this name ourselves. I guess it would be useful to have the version in UT, but no idea were to get it. Not much of a problem to have it as it is. --LorenzoCB (talk) 08:38, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response. I wasn't so much "worried" about this map as I was concerned about why I saw something here that Reader's Companion spelled differently. I already knew about the 'glir' versus 'glin' endings, but with Reader's Companion telling me that the 1954 map showed the spelling 'Hithaeglin' rather than the 'Hithaiglin' that I seem to see here, I was confused/curious.--Ed8r (talk) 14:48, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
- I see what's your confusion. Indeed, based on the latest edition of Reader's Companion from 2014, the spelling ['Hithaeglin'] is not the same shown in the print of the map on this page ['Hithaiglin'] that the book points for correction. I don't have an answer that can confirm the reason for this spelling rather than assume it's just a misspelling on this edition of the 'guide', but if comparisons still help, a print of the 1954's map at the British Library shows the spelling ['Hithaiglin'] if zoomed in the same area -- the same case occurs in the Annotated copy's facsimile. Finally, the corrected edition of the map in Unfinished Tales was included in later The Lord of the Rings editions by 2005. --Raudaz (talk) 03:03, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
