I think all your guesses on the text are correct except "I now live in 'retirement' [?in] endeavour to preserve some time free from interruptions." I think it actually says, "I now live in 'retirement' —in an en-deavour to preserve some time free from interruptions." What JRRT has originally written is "retirement —an en-..." but he then inserted an "in" above the dash with a little arrow below; so the line is like this:

                                   _in
I now live in 'retirement' —an en-
                                   ^{^}

I think you're pretty safe with them all. I believe he's made another mistake; the lines are:

free from interruptions. All letters
will be forwarded from the above below
address. I have been unwell during --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:15, 2 July 2010 (UTC)
