The Arbour of the Thrushes was a green arbour within the gardens outside the Cottage of Lost Play. In here the birds sang mightily, but the lawns were spread with gold. It had a seat there of carven stone grown with moss.[1]:61
It was in this arbour that Eriol conversed with Rúmil about The Music of the Ainur.[2]:82
The garden itself was under the care of Rúmil and had a lane of hazel-bushes which Eriol found him strolling along. It had a great number of birds, and of them Rúmil commented that "all the songs of Tol Eressëa are to be heard at times within this garden."[1]:58–59 When Eriol was wandering there, it was described as such:[2]:82
Although it seemed enclosed within great stone walls covered with fruit-trees or with climbing plants whose golden and red blossoms shone beneath the sun, yet were the nooks and corners of the garden, its coppices and lawns, its shady ways and flowering fields, without end, and exploration discovered always something new.
