caras is an Elvish word which means "moated fortress" (in Silvan Elvish) or "city" (in Noldorin/Sindarin).

The proper meaning of this word was "a built fort or dwelling surrounded by bulwarks"[1] or a "circular earthwall with dike".[2]

Etymology

It derives from PQ *karasse, rootKAR "make, build".[1]
