Forums:NoME early elven genealogies

From Tolkien Gateway

I have concluded, after some consideration, that all the genealogical relationships between the first Elves (i.e. Imin and Iminye, Tata and Tatie, Enel and Enelye) and the Three Ambassadors (Ingwe, Finwe and Elwe/Olwe/Elmo), should be left vague in the main section of the article, and the precise nature of these relationships (i.e. Ingwe being the 5th/6th/24th generation descendant of Imin and Iminye) should be reserved either for OVOTL (Other versions of the legendarium) or a lengthy note attached to the main article.

The basis for this conclusion is:

  • 1) the fact that no matter which version of these relationships this wiki accepts in the main portion of any of these articles, it still will be based on the 144:1 ratio of the sun-years to valian-years (while this wiki is based on the ~9.5:1 ratio of these years)
  • 2) the nature of these relationships was very much in flux when Tolkien was putting them on paper

However, I believe that the connection between Ingwe/Finwe/Elwe/etc. and Imin/Tata/Enel/etc. (as in, the former are the descendants of the later) is still valid and should be kept - meaning that throughout all these variations, the Three Ambassadors are consistently portrayed as kin and descendants of the original Elves. - IvarTheBoneless 14:27, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

I agree completely with this. I think we can accept the generalities of the described relationships for the main sections of relevant articles, since there's no reason to believe Tolkien would have changed his mind on such matters, but the specific years, dates, and degrees in the NOME essays are so divorced from any other narrative content we have available that they belong in OVOTL. I don't believe that this would constitute an attempt to artificially and inappropriately enforce a "canonical" version, merely an acknowledgement that not all versions of the stories are compatible. --Mord 23:27, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
