Pinnath Gelin or Green Hills was a fief in the far west of Gondor, bounded to the west by the River Lefnui, and to the east by the Morthond.[1]

History

At the time of the War of the Ring, the lord of this region was Hirluin the Fair. He led three hundred of his soldiers to the defence of Minas Tirith, all dressed in green.[2] During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields Hirluin rode with Húrin the Tall, Imrahil and the horsemen of Gondor rode eastward from Minas Tirith to the aid of Éomer and the Rohirrim.[3] Hirluin did not survive the battle and never went back to the Green Hills of his home.[4]

Etymology

Pinnath Gelin is a Sindarin name. It is usually translated as "Green Hills"[2][3] and sometimes as "Green Downs",[5] "Green Slopes", "Green Crests/Ridges"[6] or "Green-crests".[7] The first word was the dialectical Sindarin or Gondor Sindarin plural pinnath ("hill sides", "downs", "slopes", "crests", "ridges").[8] The second was a lenited version of the plural form of the word calen ("green").[9][10]

Added with the Corsairs of Umbar expansion, Pinnath Gelin is a lush and fertile land, full of farms that serve as the breadbasket of Gondor. Hirluin's seat in Ost Arndir has been inherited by his daughter, Lady Nauriel. Her young son is named Thorongil after the great hero of Gondor.
