History

The son of Adalgar Bolger and husband of Belba Baggins, Rudigar became head of the Bolger Family as the eldest heir. He had one son, Herugar.[1]

Etymology

J.R.R. Tolkien noted that it was a custom in the Bolger family to use high-sounding names and that he turned them into old names of Frankish and Gothic origin.[2] The name Rudigar contains hrod "fame" and gar "spear".[3] It is the Middle High German form of Old English Hrothgar and modern Roger. It is cognate with the modern german name Rüdiger.
