Dirhaval or Dirhavel?[edit source]

Why are there two names? I recognize Dirhaval as the proper name, but where is the source for the name Dirhavel? I am genuinely curious. If nobody finds out anything, I am doing so tomorrow and saying what I found here in this talk page. Dour1234, 20 March 2022

Both variations appear in different drafts in WOTJ. The index entry: "Dírhaval Man of Dor-lómin, author of the Narn i Chîn Húrin. 312-15; Dírhavel 311-12, 315"
Page 315, note 5, clarifies: "The name is perfectly clearly Dírhavel in A, but is typed Dírhaval in B, which being the later should have been adopted in UnfinishedTales."
The name of the character should properly be Dírhaval per CJRT, but both variants should be acknowledged since Dírhavel was the form used in Unfinished Tales. --Mord 05:00, 21 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Reference-
1) If you see in Unfinished Tales, Introduction, Part One, II The Tale of the Children of Hurin, it is mentioned Dirhavel.
2)In the notes of the chapter Narn i Chȋn Húrin, Dirhavel is mentioned four times.
3) And once in Index.
4)Dirhaval is mentioned in the Index of Names in The Silmarillion.Shivam
Good to know. Should this go under an Other names section? Dour1234, 21 March 2022
I think.--Shivam 13:37, 24 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Etymology?[edit source]

Is there any information regarding the etymology of Dirhaval’s name? Dour1234, 21 March 2022

Found some information from a source (http://tolkien.cro.net/mearth/chronicl.html) that says “The meaning of the name is unknown. It seems to contain the elements dir “watch”, el “star”, but this is too uncertain to make any guessing.” Dour1234, 11 April 2022
