Talk:Ecthelion I

[edit] Relation between Ecthelion and Egalmoth

If we see the family tree, Ecthelion I is uncle of Egalmoth not his cousin. Sorry forgot to sign.--Shivam 11:47, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

If you look at the family tree in the Genealogy section on the Ecthelion I page, you can see that Ecthelion I is not the uncle of Egalmoth. The only child of Orodreth that is shown with a line going down from Orodreth to the next generation ist the line going to his son Ecthelion. If you click on Orodreth, you can see on the Orodreth page that only Ecthelion is mentioned as the child of Orodreth. If you look at the family tree and if you click on Morwen, you can see that Morwen is the aunt of Ecthelion, because she is the sister of bis father Orodreth. If you look at the family tree and if you click on Egalmoth, you can see that Morwen had an unnamed child and that Egalmoth is the son of this unnamed child and that Egalmoth is thus the grandson of Morwen. --Akhorahil 11:41, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
If Ecthelion is the great-uncle of Egalmoth then why is it written that "He was followed by his cousin Egalmoth." in Ecthelion page.--Shivam 11:39, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
I don't know, because I did not create the page that said "cousin". As I explained Egalmoth is not the nephew of Ecthelion I, because Ecthelion I is not the brother of the unnamed parent of Egalmoth. Ecthelion I is not the great-uncle of Egalmoth, because Ecthelion I is not the brother of the grandmother of Egalmoth, Ecthelion I is not the brother of Morwen. --Akhorahil 11:48, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
Even if that unknown parent is not Ecthelion's own brother but still he is Ecthelion's cousin and Egalmoth is son of that unknown parent therefore by this Egalmoth should be Ecthelion's nephew.--Shivam 11:56, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
The definition of nephew is that this person ist the child of the brother or sister or the child of the brother or sister of the husband or of the wife. This is not the case here, so Egalmoth is not the nephew of Ecthelion I. You can look up the definition of the wird nephew in a dictionary. --Akhorahil 12:47, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
I agree with IvarTheBoneless as it should be mentioned "first cousin once removed" because I don't think of this when I read just "cousin".--Shivam 04:55, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
IvarTheBoneless did not say that it should be mentioned that Ecthelion I was the first cousin once removed of Egalmoth, he only said that he is the first cousin once removed and provided an image that explains terms for family relationships in a family tree. If you look at the Ecthelion I article, you see that it is already explained that Egalmoth was the grandson of Orodreth's sister, Morwen. That is sufficient and most readers know terms, such as grandson, sister and son. However some readers probably do not know the meaning of complex terms, such as "first cousin once removed". --Akhorahil 08:04, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
I know the meaning first cousin once removed and I was just saying that it should not be written just cousin.--Shivam 10:26, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
I already deleted "cousin" on 14 July 2021 at 11:52. You wrote again about the "cousin" after this on 14 July 2021 at 12:32 and on 15 July 2021 at 10:26. I recommend that you look at the page before discussing its contents in the talk page of the page. I am not discussing this any longer. --Akhorahil 11:19, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
Yep, I saw it just after I wrote this. Thanks.--Shivam 12:41, 15 July 2021 (UTC)
Egalmoth is Ecthelion's first cousin once removed - meaning, Egalmoth is Ecthelion's aunt's (Morwen's) grandson. Take a look at this image that explains the family tree relations: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d7/CousinTree_kinship.svg/800px-CousinTree_kinship.svg.png. Well that should should be mentioned as it creates confusion.--Shivam 12:32, 14 July 2021 (UTC)
