Transactions of the Philological Society 1934 is a journal issue published in 1934.
It publishes Tolkien's essay "Chaucer as a Philologist: The Reeve's Tale". In the lecture (delivered on 16 May 1931) Tolkien discusses Chaucer’s use of the Northern Middle English dialect as a linguistic joke in The Reeve’s Tale. The essay was reprinted in Tolkien Studies: Volume 5 in 2008.[1]
