I'm a reader who fell in with Middle-earth because of Bilbo. I first read The Hobbit when I was around twelve years old. I picked up The Lord of the Rings in college, but I put it down after the chapter "The Council of Elrond" because of all the references to older tales. So, I picked up The Silmarillion and never looked back.
My reading history is as follows:
- The Hobbit
- The Lord of the Rings ("A Long-expected Party" through "The Council of Elrond")
- The Silmarillion
- Beren and Lúthien
- The Children of Húrin
- The Fall of Gondolin
- Unfinished Tales
- Chunks of The History of Middle-earth, primarily:
- "The Lay of Leithian" (III)
- The Annals of Aman (X)
- "Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth" (X)
- The Grey Annals (XI)
- The Family Trees (XII)
After wrapping up Unfinished Tales, I plan to read The Fall of Númenor before going back to The Lord of the Rings.
Aside from Tolkien's writings, some of my favorite books include Till We have Faces by C.S. Lewis and Son by Lois Lowry.
