Wind Rose is an Italian power metal band founded in 2009 in Pisa, Tuscany. The band uses pickaxes, dwarven axes and dwarven costumes as their aesthetics. Because of the aesthetics and the band's sound, the genre they perform is often referred to as dwarf or dwarven metal.[1]
Before focusing on Dwarves in particular, the aim of their first album, Shadows over Lothadruin (2012), was to create “a Lord of the Rings-like story”. While the band now themes itself after fantasy Dwarves in the broadest sense, some of their songs contain more explicit references to Tolkien's Dwarves in particular. Their first dwarf-centered song, The Breed of Durin, on their second album Wardens of the West Wind (2015), refers to the retaking of Erebor.[1][2]
To Erebor, from their 2017 album, Stonehymn, goes a step further and is explicitly written from the perspective of the Dwarven army in the Battle of Five Armies, whereas The Returning Race on the same album seems to be written from the perspective of Thorin and Company.[3] Having some Tolkien-themed songs per album continued in 2019's Wintersaga with the songs There and Back Again and The King Under the Mountain[4], as well as in 2022's Warfront with The Battle of the Five Armies.[5]
