The Shadow Folk, also called the Úvalear,[1] were the fays that inhabited Hisilómë, according to the early version of the legendarium in The Book of Lost Tales.
After the Gnomes reached the Great Lands during their exile, they had dealings[note 1][1] with the Shadow Folk in Hisilómë, of whom it is said that they were neither "of the Valar nor of Melko", and that they came from the primeval void "when the world was first fashioned".[2]
Other versions of the legendarium
In the earlier versions of The Book of Lost Tales, the terms "Shadow Folk" and "shadow-folk" were names given in fear by Men to the Lost Elves who inhabited Hisilómë before their arrival.[3]
