Banks was a common Hobbit family name, found in the Shire and Bree. Known members of the family are Eglantine Banks, the mother of Peregrin Took, and Willie Banks, a hobbit from Bree, who was killed in the battles against the strangers who attacked Bree early in T.A. 3019. It is not known if the members of these families between the two regions are related.
The name is topographical in the sense "steep slope or hill-side".
