Beavers were large rodents, famous for their habit of building dams and lodges. They lived in Middle-earth as well as in the southern regions of the island of Númenor.[1] "Beaver the builder" was mentioned among other animals in the Long List of the Ents.[2] The Dwarven name Bífur meant "Beaver" or, by extension, "Hard Worker".[3][4]
