...to come here and look on the pool bears the penalty of death

The Forbidden Pool was a basin of water created by the waterfall that concealed one of the two entrances into Henneth Annûn.[1]

History

In the days of Steward Túrin II, most of the remaining people of Ithilien departed due to the influx of Mordor-orcs.[2] In response, he had many secret outposts and refuges established for his soldiers and in T.A. 2901 Henneth Annûn was constructed.[2] It remained the longest guarded and manned.[3]

The Rangers fiercely protected the secrecy of their refuge. The pool itself was not particularly special however it was deemed to be one of its boundaries so to swim in it was seen as trespassing upon the stronghold and held the penalty of death.[4]

While Frodo and Sam are in Henneth Annûn, Gollum, searching for fish, chanced to find the pool by accident. Frodo convinced Faramir to spare him and instead let him go down and rescue him.[5]
