Middle-earth: The Wizards, released in 1995, was the inaugural basic set for the Middle-earth Collectible Card Game.
The Wizards deals with the good side, and includes most of main characters from the books, like Gandalf, Frodo and Aragorn. The set features a pretty straightforward gameplay with relatively simple marshalling point cards and hazard creatures.
The Wizards was sold in starters and booster packs. A booster pack (15 cards, 36 boosters per display) held 1 rare, 3 uncommons, and 11 commons. A starter held a fixed set (at random), 3 rares, 9 uncommons, and 40 commons. A corresponding companion and player guide were also released.

In other languages
Dutch
Middle-earth: The Wizards was the only set printed in Dutch, for which publisher 999 Games used the Dutch title of The Lord of the Rings[note 4], without any reference to The Wizards.[2]
Beyond a different name, it also had different packaging featuring artwork by John Howe, which the publisher never properly licensed from him. The artwork was also used for a promotional card, and three binders to store cards in, again without permission or remuneration.[3]
Reception
The Wizards won the Origins Award for Best Card Game of 1995.[4]
In a review for The Duelist, Rick Swan found the game to have "enough quirky innovation to distinguish it from the multitude of play-’em-and-forget-’em copycats" of Magic: The Gathering. He praised both the art and the faithfulness to Tolkien's works, but found the rulebook poorly organized.[5]
Andy Butcher, writing for Arcane, reviewed The Wizards as well, stating that the team had “never spent so much time playing a game for review”, considering the game to be a “unique combination of the best elements of board and card games”, though also “complex, frustrating and poorly realised.” The final verdict was positive, however, stating that there was “plenty here to make it all worthwhile.”[6]
