Ninwi

From Tolkien Gateway
(Redirected from Ninwë)

Ninwi was a city of Men in the Great Lands, according to the early version of the legendarium in The Book of Lost Tales. It was identified with the city of Nineveh.[1]

It was mentioned in the tale of the Fall of Gondolin by Littleheart, where he compared its fall as even being worse than Ninwi's.[2]

Etymology

The name Ninwi is in Qenya, according to Paul Strack, but its meaning is unclear. However, it was probably a phonological imitation of Nineveh.[3]

An earlier form of the name was Ninwë.[1]
