I'm just trying to make the verbiage consistent. the last item about going on raids needs its own verb to be part of the list, or there should not be a comma after homes. i agree they didn't "have to" go to war or on raids. i'd used the word "marched" because that's the word in the text, but you're correct in this sentence that implied they "had to" march. how's this?
